Wood & Morgenstern Named Jimmy John’s Lions of the Week

May 11, 2026

SAINT LEO, Fla. – On Monday, May 11, the Saint Leo University athletic department named student-athletes Sophia Wood (women's lacrosse) and Max Morgenstern (men's golf) as the Jimmy John's Lions of the Week. The award is recognizing these student-athletes for their performances from May 4-10.

As the two wrapped up their 2026 seasons last week this marks the second selection of the year for Wood and the first for Morgenstern.

Sophia Wood closed out her senior season in historic fashion, as her five-goal performance in Saint Leo's first NCAA postseason game gave her sole possession of the program's single-season goals record. Across two NCAA Tournament games, Wood totaled 10 points on nine goals and one assist while posting a .500 shooting percentage. She also added nine draw controls, five ground balls, and converted both of her free-position attempts. Wood capped off the week by recording the 100th draw control of her career, becoming the third Lion to reach the milestone this season.

Junior Max Morgenstern finished in a share of 27th in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Regional, hosted by Valdosta State. He carded an overall score of 217 (+1) and his three-round tournament was highlighted by 68 (-4) in the second round, which, at the time just one stroke away from tying the course record at Valdosta Country Club. The Saint Leo men's golf team placed 10th in a 20-team field.

For the 2025–26 season, Saint Leo University Athletics is proud to partner with Jimmy John's to present a new weekly award recognizing student-athletes. The award will recognize athletic competition held from Monday to Sunday.

Since launching in 1983 in Charleston, Illinois, with just a $25,000 loan from his father, Jimmy John Liautaud built his modest sandwich shop into the national chain known for its "Freaky Fast" delivery and fresh-baked bread. Over the years, the brand expanded rapidly, surpassing 2,600 locations nationwide by 2025 and even venturing internationally with openings in Seoul, Toronto, and Dubai. In 2019, Jimmy John's became part of Inspire Brands, the restaurant group that also owns Arby's, Dunkin' Donuts, and more.
