SAINT LEO, Fla. – On Monday, March 16, the Saint Leo University athletic department named student-athletes Jana Nuss (women's lacrosse) and Abrahan Rios (baseball) as the Jimmy John's Lions of the Week. The award is recognizing these student-athletes for their performances from March 9-15.
Jana Nuss powered #9 Saint Leo in a 23-5 win over Lee, totaling six points on four goals and two assists. The senior attacker scored twice in the first quarter and added two more goals in the second to help the Lions build a commanding 15-2 halftime lead. With her performance, Nuss became just the second player in Saint Leo program history to reach 200 career points. She continues to lead the attack for a Lions offense that currently ranks #1 in NCAA Division II in scoring offense.
Junior
Abrahan Rios boasted a .538 batting average as he went 7-for-13 at the dish to help the Lions secure a series victory at Palm Beach Atlantic over the weekend. The Venezuela native recorded eight RBI and two runs scored. Defensively, he registered a 1.000 fielding percentage with 22 putouts and five assists. On Friday, Rios went 2-for-4 while knocking in a run and crossing home plate himself during the series-opener. In game one on Saturday, he collected two hits with two RBI followed by a three-hit performance and tied a career-best five RBI in game two that helped Saint Leo claim both games of the twin bill.
For the 2025–26 season, Saint Leo University Athletics is proud to partner with Jimmy John's to present a new weekly award recognizing student-athletes. The award will recognize athletic competition held from Monday to Sunday.
Since launching in 1983 in Charleston, Illinois, with just a $25,000 loan from his father, Jimmy John Liautaud built his modest sandwich shop into the national chain known for its "Freaky Fast" delivery and fresh-baked bread. Over the years, the brand expanded rapidly, surpassing 2,600 locations nationwide by 2025 and even venturing internationally with openings in Seoul, Toronto, and Dubai. In 2019, Jimmy John's became part of Inspire Brands, the restaurant group that also owns Arby's, Dunkin' Donuts, and more.
