Athletic Department Internships

Are you interested in a career in college athletics? Saint Leo Athletic Department has various un-paid internship opportunities for students to obtain hands-on experience in all facets of our department. 

Expectations for Athletic Department Internships 
  • Currently enrolled in Saint Leo University and in good standing
  • A desire to gain experience in a Collegiate Athletic Department
  • Good written, verbal communication, and organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and problem solve in a fast-paced environment
  • Maintain a professional appearance and conduct at all times
  • Must work well with others but also be self-sufficient
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times

ATHLETIC COMMUNICATIONS
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will work closely with the Director of Athletic Communications and assist with the different facets of an NCAA Division II Athletic Communications Department. 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Help at home athletic events including broadcasting, statistical inputting, scoreboard, and video board operator
  • Assist with camera operation to live stream all home contests
  • Generate social media content, infographics, game-day programs, and videos to promote Saint Leo Athletics and its teams
  • Support general office work, archiving videos, and photos
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Athletic Administration staff
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and over academic breaks
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 25 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite, social media platforms
 
ATHLETIC OPERATIONS
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will work closely with the Director of Operations and have various responsibilities related to the day-to-day management of athletic events and supporting game-day operations for all athletic competitions, practices, and special events.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Scheduling for Athletics events, practices, and other approved uses of Athletic fields and facilities
  • Assist with the coordination and the pre-event communication of officials, game day staff, visiting teams
  • Enter Facility Maintenance work orders for all home contests and events
  • Assist Director with the overseeing of tickets, concessions, and merchandise at games and events
  • Track attendance, inventory, revenue, and cash/wire deposits
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and over academic breaks
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 25 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at all times
  • Organize, direct, coordinate, evaluate, and schedule student workers who are your peers
  • Must be organized and detailed oriented
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite - Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is a preferred
 
BUSINESS AND FINANCE
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will work closely with the Associate Athletic Director for Business & Finance, assisting in budget preparation, specifically with the coordination of scheduling and team travel. Projects will involve preparing team travel and budget worksheets, reviewing composite schedules, preparing hotel and bus bid documents, and supporting the game contract process.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the planning, development, and execution of a comprehensive budget plan specific to team travel and scheduling
  • Assist with creating and updating budget worksheets, hotel and bus bids, and game contracts
  • Research and identify hotels that meet department expectations when traveling to new locations
  • Benchmark travel practices with other NCAA DII peers
  • Assist staff with team travel  
  • Help with day-to-day activities involved with processing business documents such as:
    • Purchase requisitions
    • Clerical support
    • Data entry
    • Accounting and research
Preferred Qualifications
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, especially Microsoft Excel
 
GAME OPERATIONS AND FACILITIES
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will assist the Assistant Athletic Director for Internal Operations in overseeing the game-day competitions and special events.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Setup and breakdown of all home athletic competitions and special events
  • Monitor facilities to make sure they are game-ready at all times
  • Make sure all facets of game operations are running smoothly and student staff is in place
  • Meet and greet officials, opposing team, and event staff. Train staff on the importance of hospitality and service 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and over academic breaks
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at all times
  • Organize, direct, coordinate, evaluate, and schedule student workers who are your peers
 
MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will work closely with the Associate Athletic Director to develop and implement promotional activities at Saint Leo Athletic events for Saint Leo students and engage with on-campus and community partners.
 Duties and Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement the promotions and game day activities for assigned sports
  • Coordinate with various areas of the department before and during events to ensure proper set-up for promotional activities and game day events
  • Work closely with Athletic Communications to promote upcoming events within the campus community and on social media. 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Adobe Suite - Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign is a preferred
  • Interest in Marketing
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, weekends, and over academic breaks
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 25 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
 
NCAA COMPLIANCE
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will assist the Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance in overseeing the game-day competitions and special events.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Become familiar with the NCAA compliance rules and software
  • Prepare compliance-related reports
  • Maintain the file compliance-related forms
  • Accurately review and track official certification, squad lists, and weekly participation rosters and notify memberships of missing information.
  • Track NCAA waivers and violations to prepare mid-year and final reports
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Compliance

  • Organize, direct, coordinate, evaluate, and schedule student workers who are your peers

SPECIAL EVENTS
Summary
A successful candidate(s) will work closely with members of the athletic department to assist in hosting Saint Leo Athletic events, including but not limited to Welcome Back, President's Club, Green and Gold Awards, Spirit of Saint Leo, and Hall of Fame.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist with the planning, execution, and follow-up of all departmental special events
  • Help with the coordination of hospitality events for donors and special guests of the department.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Willingness and ability to work nights, and weekends
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 25 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
  • Must possess a valid driver's license at all times
  • Must be organized and detailed oriented
 
STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING 
Summary
Our internship program aims to develop young professionals in the area of Strength and Conditioning.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Your internship experience will lead to exposure in areas including, but not limited to, traditional strength exercises, corrective exercises, warm-up protocols, recovery methods, program methodology, and design. 
  • Other specific areas will be based on daily duties and/or facility upkeep.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Must be personable and be able to speak in front of large groups.
  • Must be available to devote most of their day to be at the facility working with athletes or on continuing education.
  • This internship will require active learning – weekly assignments will be evaluated/graded by the staff.
  • Must be highly motivated to learn and do what is asked of them - an open mind to various training paradigms and thought processes is a must.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds and work outside in extreme weather conditions
