MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – In the final round of the 2023 Sunshine State Conference Men's Golf Championship, the Saint Leo University Men's golf team maintained its second place standing to finish as the tournament's runners-up Tuesday, shooting an overall score of 836 (275/281/280), -16 at Normandy Shores Golf Club.
Junior
Francois Cilliers was tied for second-best Round Three score with Lynn's Andres Asin, shooting 66, -5, highlighted by an Eagle on Hole 13, to finish the SSC Championship tied for third with an overall score of 205 (69/70/66), -8 and earn a spot on the conference's All-Tournament team. The Strand, Cape Town, South Africa native finished eight strokes shy of individual champion A.J. Ewart from Barry.
While Junior
Jake Nash shot even (71, E), the native of Sarasota, Fla. finished in the Top 10 with an overall score of 208 (68/69/71), -5.
Freshman
Mathieu Lafontaine once again shot an Eagle on the 18th Hole to become the only golfer in the tournament to shoot two under multiple times, as the Lions came away with four Eagles, the most out of all participating teams.
In the end, the Green & Gold could not overcome Barry's significant home course advantage, as the Buccaneers shot a team round score of 267 to capture the 2023 team title by 19 strokes. Saint Leo managed to finish six strokes ahead of Nova Southeastern.
