SAINT LEO, Fla. – The No. 7 Saint Leo men's tennis team earned an 8-1 win over Florida Southern on Wednesday to open play in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC). The win raised the Lions' overall record to 3-0, 1-0 in the SSC.
"Florida Southern gave us a battle today," said Head Coach
Chad Berryhill. "It was good for our guys to get early competition like that, we played some three setters. It was good to win key points and key times to win matches and that is what we need to do for the rest of the season to be successful."
Thomas Grinberg and
Vincent Suillerot took first doubles 8-2 followed by
Jaime Bueno and
James Defusto winning third doubles 8-5.
Saint Leo swept singles play. Grinberg earned first singles 6-2, 6-3. Suillerot earned second doubles in three sets; 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Bueno took third singles 6-0, 6-1.
Francisco Aparicio won fourth singles 7-6, 6-3.
Bruno Babic worked for the fifth singles win; 6-7, 6-2, 10-3 alongside of
James Defusto with a 7-6, 1-6, 10-8 sixth singles victory.
