Men’s Tennis, 11 Student-Athletes Receive Academic Honors from ITA

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Eleven student-athletes on the Saint Leo University men's tennis team were named Scholar-Athletes by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) while collectively, the squad was honored by the organization with its All-Academic Team Award.
 
Senior Eduardo Cohen, juniors Timothy Barrow, Thomas Buchard, Kodai Kato, Enes Kocu, Romain Malhomme and Joel Stuboeck, sophomores Filippo Caporali and Leonardo Pisa, and freshmen Sriniketh Kannan and Mahit Mekala were all recognized individually for their achievements off the court in the classroom. It is the fourth honor for Kato, the third for Stuboeck, second for Barrow and Caporali, and first for Cohen, Buchard, Kocu, Malhomme, Pisa, Kannan and Mekala.
 
Saint Leo had the eighth-most honorees of any NCAA Division II institution with 11 while fellow Sunshine State Conference member Florida Southern led the way with 17.
 
The individual awards are bestowed upon varsity student-athletes that have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters and possess a grade point average of 3.50 or higher on a 4.0 scale for the academic year. The team award goes to ITA programs that have a cumulative team GPA of 3.20 or above.
 
Saint Leo is one of seven schools from the SSC to earn the ITA All-Academic Team award including Barry (8), Eckerd (8), Embry-Riddle (12), Florida Southern (17), Lynn (5), and Rollins (7). A total of 68 individuals received the Scholar-Athlete distinction from the SSC. Florida Southern led the way with 17 recipients followed by Embry-Riddle with 12 and Saint Leo with 11.   
 
The Lions have taken home the ITA Team Academic Award for 16 of the last 17 seasons including a current streak of 12-straight honors. A total of 105 individuals have been ITA Scholar-Athletes during that time as well.
