Men's Cross Country | Oct 07, 2017

ORLANDO, Fla. – Saint Leo men's cross country battled through draining humidity to finish in third place at Saturday's Disney Cross Country Classic 8K race, held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

Saint Leo tallied 130 points in the final non-Division I standings. Wingate won the non-D1 race with 71 points, while Tiffin University was second with 88 points. Florida Tech and Johnson County Community College (Kan.) each finished with 140 points, with JCCC winning the tiebreaker based on head-to-head finish among runners.

Senior Joseph Fuller was the Lions' top finisher in 23rd place overall, 14th in points in the non-Division I scoring, after crossing the line in 27:30.5. Sophomore Ronald Cheserek was right behind Fuller in 24th place overall, 15th in points, with a time of 27:36.1.

Freshman Ethan Markey and senior Anthony Deleva also completed the race as a tandem. Markey was 45th overall, 29th in points, with a time of 28:19.7, while Deleva crossed the line .2 seconds later, and was 46th overall and 30th in points.

Sophomore Tyler Pantley rounded out the scoring runners for the Saint Leo men with this 66th place finish overall, 42nd in points, with a time of 29:11.3.

Freshman Hunter Chavis (76th overall/51st in points, 29:43.1) and senior Stephen Brown (78th overall/53rd in points, 29:44.7) were the pushers for Saint Leo among the finishers.

Tiffin's James Ngandu won the Disney Classic 8K with a time of 24:21.3; his 4:54 per mile pace was only slightly slower than his 4:49 mile pace that led him to a third-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships held last November at Saint Leo.

Saint Leo men's cross country will have its final training and tune-up race next Friday, Oct. 13, when it travels the short distance down Curley Road and Bruce B. Downs Blvd. to the University of South Florida to compete at the USF Invitational. The first race of the USF Invitational will begin at 5:00 p.m.
