Lions Ledger: Swimming opens season as eight teams in action over weekend

Tennis Notes
  • Thomas Grinberg is the lone men's tennis player in action for the Green and Gold as he competes at the ITA Oracle Cup in Rome, Ga.
  • Grinberg qualified for the ITA Oracle Cup on Sept. 25 when he won the men's singles championship during the championship matches at the ITA South Region Championship held at Valdosta State.
  • Grinberg, the 2017 ITA South Region Rookie of the Year, defeated West Florida's Serder Bojadjiev 6-4, 2-6, 11-9, to put his name as the second Saint Leo men's tennis player to capture the ITA South Region singles honors. Grinberg joined Alberto Barroso-Campos as the only two Lions to have captured the title, Barroso-Campos accomplished the feat in 2015.

Swimming Notes
  • Saint Leo men's and women's swimming open their 2017-18 seasons this weekend as Florida Tech and Lynn University visit the Bowman Aquatic Center for events on Friday and Saturday.
  • Friday's meet with Florida Tech will be a relays only event with a 3:00 p.m. start. Line-up for the meet will be 200 Medley Relay, 800 Free Relay, 3 x 100 Fly Relay, 200 Free Relay, 3 x 100 Backstroke Relay, 3 x 100 Breaststroke Relay, 400 Medley Relay, 3 x 500 Free Relay, and 400 Free Relay.
  • Saturday's event will be a women-only dual meet with Lynn University (Lynn does not sponsor men's swimming) starting at 2:00 p.m. Line-up for the meet will be 200 Medley Relay, 1000 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Breaststroke, 200 Fly, 50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Back, 200 Breaststroke, 500 Free, and 100 Fly.
  • Lynn University finished fifth at last season's SSC Women's Swimming Championships, while Florida Tech was fourth at the men's championship and sixth at the women's championship. Saint Leo was fifth at the 2017 SSC men's meet and fourth at the SSC women's championship. The women's team returns the services of SSC Freshman of the Year Annie Lindstrom and All-Americans Lindstrom, Natalie Garriock, and Mattie Shaver, while the men's team will be led by All-Americans Hunter Bains and Milosz Mikicin.
  • Fans planning on attending either meet this weekend are asked to park in the parking garage beneath University Turf Stadium, and entering the pool area through the Bowman Center breezeway. Fans will not be permitted to enter the pool area directly from the parking lot between the Bowman Center and DeChantal Hall; that entrance will be only for competitors, coaches, and meet officials/staff.

Volleyball Notes
  • Volleyball travels to Hoover, Ala. to take part in the Gulf South Conference / Sunshine State Conference Crossover and will play three matches in two days. Saint Leo will take on North Alabama at 5:45 pm Friday before a matchup with Shorter at 3:30 pm Saturday followed by a late 8 pm match with West Alabama.
  • The Lions enter at 11-2, 6-2 SSC after dropping their second match of the season in five sets to Florida Southern on Oct. 10. Saint Leo won the second and fourth sets to force a fifth, where the Lions were leading at the midway switch before falling 15-12. 
  • On the season, freshman Ashley Quero leads the attack with 132 kills on a .208 percentage. Anna Garrett is the leader in assists with 449 where Jenya Kruglova, Britt Sederholm, and Reggie Van Devender are all over 100 digs on the season. Kruloga leads with 187 with Sederholm at 108 and Van Devender at 105. 
  • Britt Sederholm has recorded back-to-back double-doubles with 10 kills and 15 digs against Lynn (Oct. 6) and 12-21 against Florida Southern (Oct. 10). Anna Garrett tallied her third double-double of the season with 38 assists and 12 digs against the Mocs. Garrett added that double-double to her 47-10 performance against Rollins and her 36-14 match against Eckerd. 
  • Annabella Arcari is the team leader for the Green and Gold in blocks with 41 where Dallas Jasper sits 11 behind at 30 total blocks.
  • Last season at the GSC/SSC Crossover, the Lions went 1-2 with a 3-2 win over North Alabama to close out the crossover and two 3-0 losses to West Florida and Valdosta State.
  • North Alabama enters after dropping a match to West Florida 3-2, snapping the Lions' five-game win streak on Oct. 10.
  • On the year Lexie Bradley leads the pack with 297 kills on a .289 clip where teammate Jessica Austin stands at 268 kills on a .413 percentage. Jayden Davilamcclary is the leader in assists with 780. Ashtyn Kapovich paces the Lions with 348 digs.
  • Shorter enters the weekend on a one game-win streak having defeated Lee 3-1 on Oct. 7 to snap its two-game skid. The Hawks are led by Tiffani Estep on the season on attack with 153 kills.
  • Three Hawks' are over the 100 assist mark led by Tinsley Fain with 273. Alli Bell, 161, and Iva Luther, 149, join Fain. Defensively, Cheyenne McLemore leads the team in digs with 256 where Estep is the team leader in blocks with 62.
  • West Alabama enters the weekend crossover on a three-game win streak with three straight sweeps of Shorter (Sept. 30), Montevallo (Oct. 6) and West Georgia (Oct. 7).
  • The Tigers are led by Briana Sandifer on the season with 245 kills on a .226 clip. Kassie Till paces the Tigers with 511 assists where Jordyn Beans is second on the team with 192. Alex Fuelling is the team leader in digs with 208 where Jamie Lancellot edged out teammate Taylor Donato for team lead in blocks 49 to 46.

Cross Country Notes

·    The Saint Leo men's and women's cross country teams will close out the non-championship portion of their 2017 seasons on Friday evening at the USF Invitational, which is held at The Claw golf course adjacent to the USF campus.

·         Joining Saint Leo at the USF Invitational out of the Sunshine State Conference will be Rollins and Tampa. The predominantly Division I field will also include teams from Miami, Central Florida, Stetson, Florida Gulf Coast, Bethune-Cookman, Jacksonville, Florida International, and Florida Atlantic, in addition to non-D1 programs from Keiser, St. Thomas, Texas Lutheran, and Pasco-Hernando State College.

·         Alyssa Bayliff took third place overall and was the top non-D1 finisher at last week's Disney Classic 5K in Orlando, Fla., and received SSC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honors. She posted a time of 18:33.8, running a 5:58.1 mile pace in extremely humid conditions.

·         The top men's finisher at the Disney Classic 8K was senior Joseph Fuller, whose time of 27:30.5 was 23rd overall.
After this weekend's USF Invitational, the Lions will prepare for next Saturday's SSC Cross Country Championships in Boca Raton, Fla. The men's race will start at 7:45 a.m., followed by the women's race at 8:45 a.m.

Women's Soccer Notes
  • Women's Soccer, who dropped its last contest 2-1 at Lenoir-Rhyne, will have its hands full Saturday when traveling to league leader #13 Nova Southeastern.
  • The Lions enter at 3-6, 2-4 SSC saw Sophia Kenny score the lone goal in the loss to the Bears Tuesday in the 72nd minute to cut the deficit to one goal.
  • Saint Leo is paced by Victoria Covas who has notched two goals on the season with six others in the mix with one goal apiece.
  • Rosie Young continues to lead the Lions in assists with three, totaling her three points on the season.
  • Between the posts, Julia Ortiz and Megan Charlton split duties with Charlton getting the previous three nods in goal. Ortiz has logged 547:02 minutes with 19 saves and a 2-4 record with two shutouts where Charlton stands at 1-2 with one shutout in 270 minutes of action. Despite three less games, Charlton is two saves behind Ortiz with 17 on the season.
  • Nova Southeastern stands at 9-1-1 on the year and 5-0-1 in conference play after a 2-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic on Oct. 11.
  • Emma Heikkila leads the shiver with five goals on the season and two assists for 12 points. Hannah Christophe leads the way in the assist column with three on the year.
  • Four Keepers have logged minutes between the posts for the Sharks with Jordan Lentz the leader in games played (10), minutes (877:47), saves (48), and record (7-1-1).

Men's Soccer Notes
  • Men's Soccer looks to get back into the win column with a matchup against Nova Southeastern Saturday. The Lions are on a two-game skid after dropping their second straight game this time to 12th ranked Florida Tech 2-0 on Oct. 10.
  • The Lions are paced by Guillaume Campos, Tyler Palmer and Hermon Constant with the team two goals each. Till Lammertz is the team leader in assists with two.
  • Between the posts, Conor McElhinney and Wessel Berenschot have split duties with McElhinney having played 578:37 minutes and owns a 2-3-1 record with 28 saves and one clean sheet. Berenschot stands at 0-4 in 360 minutes of action.
  • Nova Southeastern comes into the weekend contest on a two-game skid as well with a 3-6 record and a 1-4 mark in the SSC. The Sharks dropped their most recent game to No. 8 Palm Beach Atlantic 4-0 on Oct. 11.
  • Noel Johnson leads the frenzy with three goals on the season. Ignacio Goya is the leader in assists with three where Goya has tallied one goal to make up his five points.
  • Nico Rosiglioni owns a 2-3 record on the season with 450 minutes played and 20 saves, trailing teammate Jack Howard at 25 saves and a 1-3 record with one clean sheet in 360 minutes between the posts.
