SAINT LEO, Fla. – The pandemic has thrown our rhythms off. For example, juniors are just now experiencing their first full collegiate seasons. Part of the process of getting back to normal is sharing what used to be normal; explaining the history and significance of the events returning. Among those events making a comeback is the Saint Leo Green and Gold Awards Banquet. The Saint Leo Green and Gold Awards Banquet was last enjoyed in person during the Spring of 2019. The end of the year event is back to celebrate the 2021-2022 athletic seasons.
Â
But that leaves a question for most of the 400 student-athletes and relatively new coaches and staff. What is the Green and Gold Awards Banquet?
Â
Eclipsing the last couple of decades, the Saint Leo Athletic Department has celebrated the close of another complete year together during the Spring semester. The tradition took on the form of simple cookies and punch nearly 30 years ago and has developed into a formal banquet with over a dozen awards.
Â
The Lions opened up the Fall semester together inside University Turf Stadium in the annual Welcome Back event in early August. They will wrap up the Spring semester together inside the Marion Bowman Activities Center.
Â
The purpose is simple: Saint Leo is proud of its' student-athlete in the daily grind of NCAA Division II athletics, competing in the Sunshine State Conference, and the accomplishments that follow the dedication of living out the University's six core values.
Â
The 2021-22 GGA Banquet is set for Tuesday, April 26. The red carpet and cocktail hour will start at 6:00 p.m. followed by the awards event at 7:15 p.m. The entrance will be through the pool gate, lead to the balcony with a photographer, and move down onto the gym floor featuring food and beverages. The second half of the night will be on the other side of the gym utilizing the bleachers, a stage, and videoboard.
Â
Due to space limitations, the event is invite-only. The awards ceremony will be broadcasted live for free on the Sunshine State Conference Digital Network. The link will be available at sunshinestatconference.tv/saintleo.Â
