Volleyball Notes
  • Saint Leo opens up their home schedule portion and Sunshine State Conference play with Rollins at 7 p.m.
  • The Lions enter the weekend after a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-20, 26-24) of Flagler on Sept. 19 in St. Augustine, Fla. 
  • Saint Leo was led by Nina Vattovaz who recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs. 
  • Anna Garrett led the team Tuesday with 31 assists where Jenya Kruglova led with 15 digs, just ahead of Britt Sederholm with 14. 
  • On the year, Vattovaz leads the team in points (66) and kills (53), where Garrett leads in assists (166) and Kruglova in digs (70).
  • Rollins enters with a 1-5, 0-2 SSC record with their most recent match going to no. 4 Palm Beach Atlantic, 3-0, on Sept. 16. 
  • The Tars were led by Shannon McDonough who tallied 16 kills for 16 points and Cassidy Cason who notched 35 assists. Rachel Fletcher added a team high 10 digs ont he night. 
  • On the year, Bri Civiero leads the team with 82 kills where McDonough has tallied 70. Cason leads the team in assist with 213 and Fletcher holds a two dig advantage over Civiero with 66 and 64, respectively.

Cross Country Notes
  • If Florida had a state collegiate championship, it would be the University of Florida's Mountain Dew Invitational which holds its 29th running this Saturday at UF's Mark Bostick Golf Course. A total of 27 men's teams and 33 women's teams – most of them from the state of Florida – are slated to compete in this year's event. Joining Saint Leo from the Sunshine State Conference will be Embry-Riddle, Florida Tech, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Tampa.
  • In the men's race, Saint Leo sophomore Ronald Cheserek will be attempting to defend his individual crown won at last year's Mountain Dew Invitational. Cheserek stunned the crowd at the 2016 UF MDI when he won 8K race with a time of 24:43.02, just shy of a Saint Leo record and 18 seconds ahead of the next closest finisher, former UF standout Eddie Garcia. The result earned Cheserek USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors, becoming the first SSC athlete to receive the award. Cheserek led Saint Leo to a first-place finish among the non-Division I teams in the event.
  • On the women's side, senior Colett Rampf set a new Saint Leo 5K record with her time of 17:32.04 at the 2016 UF Mountain Dew Invitational, finishing fifth overall and first among non-Division I runners. Rampf led a trio of Saint Leo runners to finish among the top ten in points in the non-Division I scoring, as Saint Leo tallied 47 points – well ahead of second-place Tampa with 101 points.
  • The high school portion of the UF Mountain Dew Invitational has been cancelled due to damage and flooding caused by Hurricane Irma.

Women's Soccer Notes
  • Saint Leo hosts Florida Southern as part of Alumni Night at University Soccer Field. 
  • The Lions enter at 2-2 after taking a 1-0 win over Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach Wednesday night. Kristen Cleveland scored the lone goal in the 16th minute as Saint Leo went on to hold onto the 1-0 victory. Julia Ortiz picked up her second shutout with the full 90 minutes in goal for the Lions with four saves. 
  • Cleveland joined Sofie Haellsten and Rebecca Anderson as the lone goal scorers on the year, each tallying one goal apiece. 
  • Ortiz has played in goal for all four games and has recorded a total of 360 minutes between the posts with 14 saves. 
  • Florida Southern enters the match at 1-1-1 and 0-1 in the SSC after dropping its SSC opener to Rollins 1-0 Wednesday evening in Winter Park, Fla. 
  • The Moccasins have three players with goals on the year in Leah Borders, Dominique Cirnigliaro and Jess Goedde. All three have found the back of the net once. 
  • Keepers Helena Norrstrom and Paige Koetter have split time in goal where Norrstrom has started all three games for a 1-1-1 record with 245 minutes of action and 11 saves. Koetter has played 45 minutes and has yet to concede a goal while notching one save between the posts.

Men's Soccer Notes
  • The men's soccer team will look to bounce back after a 3-0 loss to No. 9 Palm Beach Atlantic on Sept. 20 at home as they travel to Lakeland to face off with Florida Southern at 7 p.m.
  • Saint Leo (1-4) stands at 1-1 in Sunshine State Conference play where the Moccasins are 0-1. 
  • On the year, the Lions are led by Guiaume Campos who has scored two goals for four points, both coming in the double-overtime win over Embry-Riddle. 
  • Yuga Yanagisawa, Bryce Wilson and Tyler Palmer have found the back of the net for one goal thus season where Till Lammertz and Armin Bajric have tallied one assist apiece on the year. 
  • Splitting work between the posts, keepers Conor McElhinney and Wessel Berenschot have combined for 21 saves on the season, 17 and 4 respectively. McElhinney stands at 1-2 with 288:37 minutes played where Berenschot is 0-2 with 180 minutes. 
  • The Mocs enter after a 1-0 loss to Rollins Wednesday night to open SSC play.
  • On the year, Rene Rivera and Romain Voirin have notched two goals apiece to lead the team where Fred Lundahl and the Spansk brothers, Carl and Edward, have each scored one goal. Christoph Gums leads the team in assists with three on the young season. 
  • Keeper Benny Yusufoglu is the lone keeper to log minutes thus far with 250 played with a 2-0 record and nine saves.

  • The Saint Leo men's and women's tennis teams will participate int he 2017 South ITA Regional Championships Sept. 22-25 in Valdosta, Ga.
  • On the men's side, the Lions will join Lynn, Florida Southern, Delta State, Auburn-Montgomery, West Alabama, Montevallo, Barry, Valdosta State, Florida Tech, Rollins, West Florida, Embry-Riddle, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Mississippi College for competition this weekend. 
  • On the women's side, Saint Leo will join Lynn, Florida Southern, Delta State, Auburn-Montgomery, Nova Southeastern, Montevallo, Barry, Valdosta State, Florida Tech, Rollins, West Florida, Embry-Riddle, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Mississippi College.

Battle at Old South | Sept. 23-24

Women's Golf Notes
 
  • Saint Leo women's golf makes its annual trip to the South Carolina Low Country with this weekend's appearance at the "Battle at Old South," hosted by UNC-Pembroke. The tournament will be played at the par 72, 5,874-yard Old South Golf Links.
  • The Lions are three-time defending champions of the "Battle at Old South" and will be attempting the four-peat at this year's tournament. Marie Coors (143, -1) was Saint Leo's top finisher a year ago with her third-place showing; she led a quartet of Saint Leo golfers who finished among the top 20. 
  • Heading this year's squad is freshman Synne Lauritzen, who was the Lions' top finisher at last weekend's Daytona State Lady Falcon Invitational at LPGA International. Lauritzen was fourth overall with a six-over 150 over the 36-hole tournament.

  • The Field: Schools slated to compete in this year's "Battle at Old South" are Barton, Lee, Savannah College of Art & Design, Coker, West Georgia, Catawba, Eckerd, Flagler, Shorter, Lenoir Rhyne, Young Harris, Mount Olive, Columbus State, Florida Southern, and North Georgia.

Cougar Invitational | Sept. 25-26

Where: Country Club of Columbus | Columbus, Ga.

Men's Golf Notes
 
  • After hosting the opening tournament, the Lions travel north to Georgia to participate in the Cougar Invitational at the Country Club of Columbus, hosted by Columbus State on Sept. 25-26. The Lions will play the par 71, 6,515-yard course that features three par five's, 11 par four's, and four par three's. 
  • In their last outing, the Lions took 10th out of 15 teams with a 882 ( 18) score for three rounds, led by Riley Goss who shot an even par-216 to tie for 20th out of the 90 golfers in the field. Goss turned in cards of 71-73-72 for his three tournaments to open up his junior campaign on the links. As a team, Saint Leo posted rounds of 291-292-299 to fall one spot on the final day.
