Lions Ledger: Swimming returns to action as Women's basketball heads to Lynn for tournament

Swimming Notes
  • Saint Leo men's and women's swimming heads to its final meet of the 2017 calendar year at this weekend's University of Tampa Spartan Invitational. The meet will be held at the Doyle Aquatic Center and the Long Center in Clearwater, which will also host this year's Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships.
  • Participating teams in the Spartan Invitational include Saint Leo, Florida Southern, Nova Southeastern, Indian River State College, and Division I Rice University (women only), in addition to the host Spartans.
  • Daily schedule of events (all relays will be timed finals in the evening session):
    • Friday (Timed finals 5:30 PM)
      200 Medley Relay, 1000 Freestyle, 200 Free Relay
    • Saturday (Prelims 9:30 AM / Finals 6:00 PM)
      500 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50 Freestyle, 400 Medley Relay
    • Sunday (Prelims 9:30 AM / Finals 6:00 PM)
      400 Individual Medley, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, 800 Free Relay
    • Monday (Prelims 9:30 AM / Finals 5:00 PM)
      1650 Freestyle, 200 Backstroke, 100 Freestyle, 200 Breaststroke, 200 Butterfly, 400 Free Relay
  • Admission will be $5 per person per session, and includes heat sheets.

Women's Basketball Notes
  • Freshman Alani Gallagher showcased career-high 26-point in Saint Leo's 72-70 win over Johnson & Wales (Fla.) on Tuesday in the Marion Bowman Activities Center
  • Ragen Dotson continues to lead the Lions in scoring, averaging 11.5 PPG. Dotson enters the Lynn University Holiday Classic after scoring 13 points against the Wildcats Tuesday night, going perfect on the free throw line (6-6).
  • Nikira Hooks leads the Lions in rebounding averaging 5.5 RPG
  • Saint Leo will defend a four-game win streak against the Shaw Bears
  • Shaw's LaQuisha Taylor averages 24.4 PPG on the season, shooting 49.4% from the field, 73.9% on the charity stripe. Off the glass, she averages 7.4 RPG.
  • KlinTisha Martin is another sharp shooter for the Bears, averaging 14.1 PPG, shooting 42.7% from the field, 78.7% from the free throw line. Martin leads the Bears in rebounding with 8.0 RPG.
  • The Coastal Georgia Mariners will face Lynn University Fighting Knights on Sunday, December 17 at 2:00 p.m. as an exhibition contest
  • Brianna Gipson leads the Mariners scoring, averaging 15.3 PPG, shooting 43.8% from the field, 70% on the free throw line. Off the boards, she averages 7.1 RPG
  • Danesha Murray averages 7.3 rebounds a game as the Mariners rebounding leader. She averages 10.5 PPG. Solrun Gisladottir also enters averaging double digit scoring with 13.4 PPG
  • Coastal Georgia will face Saint Leo defending a three-game winning streak. The Mariners overcame a cold start to claim an 87-77 victory over Webber International on Saturday, Dec. 9 at Coffin Gym

Men's Basketball Notes
  • Saint Leo enters the Tuesday matchup with a 7-7 record after an 86-58 setback at Rollins on Dec. 9.
  • In their last outing, the Lions DeAndre King pace the team with 20 points where Isaiah Hill added 10 and Junior Searcy eight.
  • On the year, King leads the team with 12.8 points per game where Searcy is second with 12.0 ppg. Hill, 11.3 ppg, and Tyreece Brice, 10.8 ppg, round out the double-digit averages on the squad. Hill leads the team in rebounds with 5.3 where Brice is the team lead in assists with 68 total. Hill leads the No. 3 team in the nation in total steals (113) with 33 where Brice has picked up 25. King stands at 12, Searcy at 10 and Daniel Duarte at 11.
  • Thomas will enter the Tuesday game after a Friday night game against Samford on Dec. 15. The Nighthawks stand at 5-7 before the weekend, after an 89-83 setback to Webber International on Dec. 13. On Dec. 9, the Nighthawks upset NAIA No. 24 Warner, 70-66. Against SSC foes, Thomas fell to Barry 106-60 on Nov. 21.
  • On the season, Katrell Myers leads the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game. He averages 9.0 rebounds per game to lead the team in two categories, in just two games played.  JaVoris Cooks is the team leader through 12 games played with 15.7 points per game where Johnnel Ginnie is second on the team in scoring with 11.7 ppg and is the leader in rebounds with 5.5 rpg.
