Alberto Castagnara ties for 15th out of 86 golfers to lead the Green and Gold

May 08, 2021

BOWLING GREEN, Fla. - No. 12 Saint Leo men's golf concluded play for the 2021 season after taking 11th out of the 16 teams at the South/Southeast Regional at Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Florida. The Lions finished with a team score of 887 (+23) after carding a final round 299 (+11). Alberto Castagnara was the top individual for the Green and Gold where he came in 15th place out of 86 players on the par-72 7,139-yard Blue Course with a 54-hole score of 218 (+2).

The Pordenone, Italy native, continued his trend of the weekend of shaving strokes as he fired off a final round one-under 71. With three birdies Saturday, Castagnara finished tied for fifth among the golfers in birdies for the tournament with 12. Castagnara climbed 12 spots over Saturday's round to finish inside the top-15 after putting together rounds of 75, 72, and 71, respectively for the three day regional.

Oliver Lilliedahl came in second on the team as he finished tied for 41st with a score of 223 (+7) following a final round 77 (+5). Jake Nash jumped in the field after carding a one-over 73 for his final round and finished with a 54-hole tournament score of 224 (+8). Francois Cilliers and Colin Kresl rounded out the five Lions in 53rd and 58th place, respectively. Cilliers ended his first regional with a score of 225 (+9) while Kresl closed his first regional with a 227 (+11).

Due to a shortened field, only the top four teams will advance out of the South/Southeast, which is normally between five and seven teams the past few years. This year, Lee, the South/Southeast Region Champion, will represent the region at the national championship along side West Florida, the number one team in the country, Columbus State, and Georgia Southwestern. Individually moving on is Alberto Avila (Erskine), who won the medalist honors and will advance as a non-team participant after winning the regional with a 209 (-7).

Keeping Our Lions Healthy & Safe
Saint Leo University Athletics is keeping our student-athletes healthy and safe by following a number of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. This includes having student-athletes tested or screened on a regular basis, traveling in smaller groups, limiting the number of fans in attendance, avoiding overnight trips, and wearing masks when not competing. These safety standards meet those set by the NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference President's Council. At Saint Leo University, the COVID-19 Incident Command Team also reviews the teams' safety protocol and monitors adherence on a regular basis.
