Lions Explode for 12 Runs in Series Opener

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team earned its second non-conference run-rule victory of the season Saturday night as the Lions defeated visiting Alderson Broaddus 12-2 in seven innings after scoring five runs in the bottom of the final frame. Several Lions had outstanding performances at the plate with six Lions with two or more hits in the contest.
 
Saint Leo tallied 15 hits including seven for extra bases. Redshirt junior James McCallum, redshirt sophomore Paul Coumoulos and redshirt junior Danny Torres all finished with three hits in the victory while senior Jake Vander Wal led the team with three RBI which all came on a big three-run home run in the sixth inning.
 
McCallum was 3-for-4 at the dish with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Coumoulos was also 3-for-4 with an RBI, a double and two runs scored. Torres nearly reached the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI, a double and a triple.
 
Vander Wal was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, three RBI and a run scored. Seniors Sam Crail and Brett Esau each drove in two runs in the game. Crail, who went 2-for-5 at the dish, finished with a triple while Esau, who was 2-for-4, tallied a double.
 
Sophomore Jestin Jones earned the start and went 4.2 innings on the mound with seven strikeouts and five walks. He allowed just two hits and two runs. Senior Joey Antonopoulos came in to pitch the final 2.1 innings and secured the victory, his first of the season. He allowed just one hit while striking out four and walking one.
 
Both teams went scoreless through the first four innings of the contest including Alderson Broaddus who was held without a hit during that span. The Battlers broke through for two runs in the top of the fifth but the Lions immediately answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half. The Lions had a pair of doubles and a triple in the inning to go along with a single and a Alderson Broaddus error.
 
After the four run inning, the Lions offense opened up as they tallied three in the sixth off the Vander Wal home run and five big runs in the seventh to end the game.
 
Aidan Massad suffered the loss for the Battlers going 4.2 innings on the mound while allowing eight hits and four runs.
 
The Lions will return to action tomorrow as they play a doubleheader versus Alderson Broaddus beginning Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
