Pair of Complete Game Gems Lead Lions to Victory

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team received a pair of solid pitching performances from redshirt junior Jeremy Peel and freshman Andy Booth as they each threw complete games Sunday to help the Lions sweep a doubleheader over the visiting Battlers of Alderson Broaddus. Peel threw 7.0 innings of shutout baseball while striking out seven while Booth went 7.0 as well while allowing two runs and striking out eight.
 
The Lions took game one 5-0 before winning game two 8-2. The pair of victories moved the Lions' record to 6-15 while the Battlers fell to 1-11.
 
Peel toed the rubber in game one and held the Battlers off the scoreboard while allowing just four hits, striking out seven and not surrendering a walk. The victory was the first of the season for Peel as he moved to 1-2 overall.
 
Redshirt sophomore Paul Coumoulos led the team with two RBI in the 5-0 victory. He was 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a home run. Seniors Jake Vander Wal and Jacob Reimold each drove in a run in the game as well.
 
The Lions scored two runs in the second, two in the third and a solo run in the fifth to claim the victory.
 
In game two Booth took the mound and scattered four hits while allowing a pair of runs. He struck out eight and walked three. The victory was the first decision of his young career.
 
The Lions received RBI from five different players but it was once again Coumoulos leading the way with two. He was 1-for-2 at the plate with a run scored and a walk. Senior Amir Wright, junior Sam Crail, Vander Wal and senior Brett Esau all provided an RBI in the game. Vander Wal was 3-for-3 at the dish with two runs scored, two stolen bases and a double. Crail went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double, a home run and a walk. Esau was the only other Lion with more than one hit as he finished 2-for-4 with a double.
 
The Lions plated two in the first, three in the third and three more in the sixth while the Battlers scored one in the third and one in the seventh.
 
The Lions will return to action tomorrow as they close out the four-game series with Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m.
