Lions Drop Low-Scoring Contest

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team suffered a 4-1 defeat Friday night versus visiting Kentucky Wesleyan. The Lions struggled to get any offense going behind a strong pitching performance from sophomore Ruddy Gomez.

Gomez went 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts against just one walk. He scattered eight hits while allowing four runs including three earned. The loss was Gomez's third of the season to move his record to 2-3.

The Lions dropped to 3-15 while Kentucky Wesleyan improved to 6-5 in 2020.

Senior Amir Wright returned to the lineup after missing six games and proceeded to lead the team with three hits on the night including a double and an RBI. Two other Lions picked up hits including senior Jake Vander Wal and sophomore Mike Wyman.

The Lions loaded the bases in the first, seventh and eighth innings but was only able to secure one run in that span which came in the seventh while Wright double down the left field line to score Wyman.

The Panthers did their damage in the second, fourth and seventh innings. They opened the scoring with a solo home run in the second before hitting a two run blast in the fourth. The final tally came in the seventh on a Saint Leo error.

The Lions will return to action tomorrow night at 6 p.m. as they begin a four-game series with Alderson Broaddus.
