Lions Ledger: Women's Lacrosse Hosts East Stroudsburg in Massive Showdown

  • RECORDS: Saint Leo 4-2 | #18 Florida Atlantic 3-1 | St. Petersburg 0-0 | #16 Georgia State 3-1 | #7 Stetson 3-2
  • Saint Leo heads to the Stetson Spring Fling this weekend where the Lions will face three nationally-ranked programs including #7 Stetson, #16 Georgia State and #18 Florida Atlantic. The Lions are riding a two-match win streak heading into the weekend.
  • Redshirt sophomore Anna Garrett and junior Nina Vattovaz have teamed up at No. 1 for the Lions in all six matches this season. The duo is 5-1 on the year leading the Lions this season. The team of freshman Marissa Rakauskas and sophomore Arlaina Stephenson are perfect on the year at 4-0 with two matches at No. 2 and two at No. 3.
  • #18 Florida Atlantic is 3-1 this season with wins over Mercer, #16 Georgia State and North Florida. The Owls lone loss came in a 3-2 defeat to #14 Florida International. St. Petersburg has yet to compete this season and have never faced the Lions. #16 Georgia State is 3-1 on the year with victories over Florida International, North Florida and Mercer. Their lone loss came to FAU in a 5-0 decision. #7 Stetson has opened the year 3-2 with wins over #16 TCU, Louisiana Monroe and #7 Cal Poly. The Hatters two losses came at #2 Florida State and versus Houston Baptist.
  • The Saint Leo men's and women's track programs return to Tampa to compete in the UT Track Classic.
  • The Lions competed last Friday at Tampa with several strong performances. Sophomore Aoife Mahony led the women with a first place finish in the 1,500m and second din the 800m. She also was part of the winning sprint medley relay team.
  • The men's top finish came in the 1,600m sprint medley relay as the Lions took second to the Spartans. Freshman Bryce Jefferson, sophomore Tristan Karuzis, freshman Douglas Gray and freshman Jake LockHart teamed up to take silver with a time of 4:00.47.

  • Saint Leo travels south for their first road Sunshine State Conference series of the season at Lynn. The Lions and Fighting Knights will play at 2:30 p.m. Friday followed by an 11 a.m. doubleheader Saturday. Saint Leo is coming off three-straight losses and is seeking its first road win of the year.
  • Senior Amir Wright continues to lead the Lions in batting average at .419 from his lead-off spot. Wright has the lone batting average above .300 for the Lions whom have had regular at bats this season. Junior Sam Crail continues to lead the team in RBI with 14 while seniors Jake Vander Wal and Brett Esau sit in second with 12 apiece.
  • The Lion pitching staff is being led by sophomore Ruddy Gomez who has earned both of Saint Leo's two wins this season. He now has a team-best 2.86 ERA and has seen a team-high 22.0 innings of action. He also leads the team in strikeouts with 26 and has nearly 10 more than his nearest teammate in that category. Redshirt junior Jeremy Peel has had a pair of strong non-conference performances on the mound this season and sits in second in ERA at 3.75. He currently has the fourth most innings pitched at 12.0 this season.
  • Lynn has been trading wins for losses over the last seven games. They took 2-of-3 against Eckerd last weekend on the road. Prior to that they dropped an 11-inning thriller at Montevallo 3-2 and took 2-of-3 at Miles.
  • Senior Trevor Romeo has paced the offense for the Fighting Knights this season with his .442 batting average. He ranks second on the team in RBI with 15. Junior Joseph Encarnacion leads the squad with 16 RBI while belting out three home runs.
  • Seniors Nicholis Prather and Chris Mormile lead the pitching staff with 2-0 records. Prather has a 2.66 ERA with 19 strikeouts over 20.1 innings pitched. Mormile comes in with a 5.54 ERA over 13.0 innings pitched with 11 Ks. Senior Misael Castillo has seen the most action at 21.0 innings pitched.
  • HISTORY: The Lions have won five of the last six meetings with the Fighting Knights including the most recent three match-ups in Boca Raton. The last time Lynn won a series against the Lions came back in 2017 when the Fighting Knights won two-of-three games against Saint Leo.

  • Saint Leo hosts Palm Beach Atlantic for the first SSC series at home for the 2020 season. The Lions look to bounce back after dropping the opening SSC series 2-1 at Tampa. The Lions salvaged game two of the series 2-0.
  • On the young season, Kacie Kelly is leading the way with a .467 clip with a team-high 21 hits. Her three doubles thus far to pace the team.
  • Kayla Betts remains the top pitcher on staff based on ERA at 0.69. Madi Mott has logged the most innings of work at47.0 while she leads the team in strikeouts at 51.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic travels to Saint Leo on a two-game skid having dropped the last two games against no. 12 North Georgia 11-3, 2-0.
  • On the year, Magnolia West is the team leader with a .388 average and 26 hits while sitting second in RBI at eight.
  • Abbey Busby is the team leader in ERA (1.18), wins-losses (7-3), innings pitched (77.0), and strikeouts (59).
  • HISTORY: In the last three series, PBA holds a 6-3 lead where the Lions win the last series a year ago 2-1 in West Palm Beach. The Green and Gold took game one 6-3 before a 5-1 game two, falling in game three 2-0.

  • #16 Saint Leo holds a three-game win streak as they get ready to face its second Top-15 opponent of the season. Saint Leo defeated No. 13 Limestone (16-11) on Feb. 16 followed by a dramatic comeback win (16-15) over Roberts Wesleyan last weekend. Ashlee Wilsynski netted the come from behind game-winner to round off a five goal performance against the Red Hawks. Janee DeLuce helped the efforts, scoring a hat-trick off six shots. Ashley Salvett snagged five draw controls and picked up a team-high five ground balls. In the net, Erin Davis earned seven saves seeing 30 shots.
  • On the season, Wilsynski has accumulated 19 points (14g, 5a) followed by DeLuca (10g, 2a) and Kaci Archer (9g, 3a) with 12 points apiece. Salvett leads the team off the draw with 27 and a team-high 15 ground balls and four caused turnovers as a senior defender.
  • #12 East Stroudsburg opened the 2020 defeating Georgian Court (15-7) on Saturday. The Warriors had six players record multi-point performances paced by Ginanna LeDuc with five-points (3g, 2a). Krista Mitarotonda earned a team-high six draw controls in the victory. Goalkeeper, Tatyana Petteway, earned five stops in her 60 minutes of work.
  • Friday marks the first-ever women's lacrosse meeting between Saint Leo and East Stroudsburg.
  • Saint Anselm will open the year at University Turf Stadium on Sunday. In 2019, the Hawks finished the year with a 7-9 overall record, going 5-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference (NE10). Saint Anselm graduated only three players from a younger roster, returning four of its top five scorers from 2019. Six new faces join the experienced Hawks. In between the pipes, Saint Anselm returns sophomore Grace Young and senior Becca Shea.
  • Sunday marks the first-ever women's lacrosse meeting between Saint Leo and Saint Anselm.

  • Saint Leo dropped a 74-60 final to Eckerd Wednesday night. The Triton's second quarter run was too much for the Lions to overcome in the second half. Saint Leo was paced, once again, by its' rookie point guard, Amanda Ulrich. Ulrich recorded her ninth 20-plus point game, her third straight, while tallying her 23rd game scoring double-digits. The Secaucus, N.J. product compiled 24 points and eight rebounds. She was followed by Alani Gallagher and Gina Brierley with 14 and 11 points, respectively. Alex Button grabbed a game-high nine rebounds but was held to six points.
  • On the season, Ulrich averages 15.9 points per game (ppg) followed by Button with 13.7 ppg and Gallagher with 13.5 ppg. Gallagher, a junior forward, holds a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game (rpg) and a team-high 33 blocks.
  • Saint Leo, the fourth seed among conference standings, is the second highest scoring team averaging 73.4 ppg. The Lions are also the second highest in three-point field goal percentage averaging a .360-percent and lead the league in three-point field goal percentage defense at .277-percent. Alani Gallagher's work on the hardwood earned her fourth SSC weekly honor on Monday. The reigning Defensive Player of the Week averaged a double-double scoring 11.5 points and 10 rebounds while facing Embry-Riddle and Lynn.
  • Barry dropped its second consecutive game on Wednesday after traveling to Nova Southeastern. The Sharks defeated the Buccaneers in a tight 66-65 decision. The one-point game nearly saw Barry complete a 14-point comeback. The Bucs were paced by Ashleigh Pink and Nerea Baena with 18 points apiece followed by Harriet Swindells with 14 points. Off the boards, Barry was led by Charlotte Armstrong with 12 rebounds.
  • On the season, Swindells averages a team-high 15.2 ppg while Nichel Tampa (13.1) and Baena (10.2) also average double-digits. Emma Hergot holds a team-high 7.0 rpg challenged by Baena's 6.4 rpg.
  • Among the SSC standings, Barry sits 10th paced by Harriet Swindells, the conference's fifth highest scorer. As a unit, the Bucs average 62.3 ppg and 35.7 rpg.
  • HISTORY: Last meeting on Jan. 18 in Saint Leo, Fla., the Lions made the Buccaneers walk the plank, in a 77-68 decision. Button paced the Green and Gold with 20 points going 6-for-10 including a perfect 4-for-4 night from downtown and the charity stripe. Gallagher challenged Button for the lead with 19 points while Ulrich nearly notched a double-double with 11 points, eight rebounds.

  • Saint Leo heads to Miami Shores to close out the regular season and look to hold down the sixth seed in the SSC tournament with a win against Barry. The Lions fell to the Tritons 88-80 Wednesday night where Eckerd erased a 20-point deficit to win by eight.
  • In the loss, Isaiah Hill and Kyran McClure led the way with 17 points while McClure paces the team on the year with 21.0 points per game with Hill at 17.1.
  • Saint Leo 82 points per game in conference play but allows 83 points per game to its opponents.
  • Barry welcomes the Lions to the Health & Sports Center for the season finale after calling it close to No. 14 Nova Southeastern 91-87 Wednesday night. In the win, Tylan Birts paced all scorers with 25 points and 11 rebounds.
  • On the year, Birts ist the team leader in points per game at 19.2 while Jake Kakar is second at 12.2.
  • Barry averages 86 points per game and holds its opponents to 85.
  • HISTORY: Barry holds a slight edge, 38-37, in the all-time series where the Lions brought it within one with a 105-86 win on Jan. 18 at home. In the win, McClure scored 27 points to lead all scorers while Hill and Wade Coomer tacked on 21 each. Johannes Dolven led the Bucs in scoring with 19 points.

  • Saint Leo registered its second straight win at Young Harris on Saturday. The Lions defeated the Mountain Lions 17-11 at the YHC Soccer and Lacrosse Field. The Green and Gold were paced by Tyler Eames five goals and assist for a game-high six points. Philip Buque also found the back of the net, recording a hat-trick. Jordan Williams 62.5-percent (20-32) on the face and picked up a game-high nine rebounds. The junior faceoff specialist was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Team of the Week for his work. Ian Areford earned 12 stops in the win.
  • On the season, Eames paces the Lions with 14 points as the team's leading goal scorer with 12. Williams enters Sunday afternoon going 60-percent (36-60) at the face with a team-high 18 ground balls. Long Stick Middle, Ethan Ticehurst, has caused five turnovers and picked up 14 ground balls for the Lions defense. Areford has started all three games. He averages 11.67 goals allowed with 37 saves paired with a save percentage of 51.4-percent.
  • #1 Limestone has only allowed seven goals in its last two games. The undefeated Saints have faced Lees-McRae (25-11), Tusculum (18-7), and Florida Tech (16-7). Three Saints registered career-high performances in the win over the Panthers.
  • On the season, Larson Sundown holds a team-high 20 points (9g, 11a) followed by Tyler Papa with 14 points as the team's leading scorer with 11 goals. Faceoff Specialist, Dakota Kirsch-Downs brings with him a 73-percent (27-37) at the 'X' to Savannah. He also has picked up a team-high 24 ground balls. On defense, Jake Croster has caused seven turnovers while picking up six ground balls. In the net, five different goalkeepers have seen action. Gary Cutler has earned all three starts, in which he has faced 73 shots, earned 24 saves paired with a save percentage of 58.5-percent. He has kept his average goals allowed average down to 7.91.
  • HISTORY:Last meeting in February of 2019, the No. 6 Saints defeated the No. 9 Lions, 18-7 in Savannah, Ga.
