Lions Ledger: Quiet weekend at home as Fall sports hit the road

  • Saint Leo travels to the UIndy Invitational Friday and Saturday to face four opponents including the host Greyhounds. The Lions will face UIndy and Davenport on day one followed by Northern Michigan and Saginaw Valley State on day two.
  • The Lions went 3-1 last weekend at the Barry University Classic led by junior Ashley Quero and senior Anilise Fitzi who had 39 and 38 kills, respectively. Saint Leo defeated East Stroudsburg, Saint Anselm and American International while falling in five to Minnesota State Mankato.
  • Saint Leo dominated from the serve as the Lions put down 42 aces over the four matches with senior Fabiola Rosado leading the charge with nine. Nine different Lions posted service aces last weekend with five having five or more over the four matches.
  • UIndy enters the weekend with a 3-0 record and are 2-0 against the Lions all-time. The most recent meeting between the two programs came in 2005. Davenport posted a 1-3 record over the opening weekend and will meet the Lions for the first time. Northern Michigan enters with a 2-2 record and will face the Lions for the second time ever after falling 3-1 back in 2007. The final opponent on the weekend will be Saginaw Valley who holds a perfect 4-0 record and is 1-1 all-time against the Lions with the most recent meeting coming in 2010.
  • The Saint Leo women's soccer team broke into the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NCAA DII National Poll on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at number 23. The No. 23 Lions are the only Sunshine State Conference team featured in the opening week's poll after the Green and Gold put up a perfect 2-0 season start.
  • Under the direction of first-year head coach Peter McGahey, the Lions upset Mississippi College, ranked No. 13 in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll, 1-0 on Friday. The Green and Gold tallied a comeback win over West Alabama on Sunday to earn the program's best season start since 2014.
  • The success brought in two Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors in the form of Offensive Player of the Week, Adriana Tirado and Defensive Player of the Week, Rebecca Anderson.
  • Carolina Solis-Deleon and Anderson enter the week with a goal apiece while Tirado has a goal and an assist followed by Raylyn Straubmuller with an assist.
  • In goal, Julia Ortiz has earned 13 stops.
  • Montevallo enters the week with a 0-1-1 record after coming to a draw with Trevecca Nazarene University (0-0) and a 3-1 loss from Louisiana Tech.
  • Tylor Ring scored the Falcons lone goal in the 54' minute while facing La Tech.
  • In goal, Judith Perez-Bayon and Annie Mason have each earned starts. Perez-Bayon earned two stops while Mason tallied seven saves.
  • Last meeting in September 2008, the Lions grabbed a 1-0 win over the Falcons.
  • Christian Brothers clinched a 1-0 start defeating Missouri S&T on Sunday.
  • Hannah Ward scored both goals in the win at the 6th and 46th minutes against the Miners.
  • Riley Chafin earned three saves in the victory.
  • Last meeting in September 2017, Saint Leo downed Christian Brothers 2-0.
  • Saint Leo suffered a double overtime loss at Southeastern (1-0) followed by a 2-1 loss at West Florida.
  • Federico Tellechea converted a free kick in the 55th-minute at West Florida.
  • Wessel Berenschot and Christian Evans have each earned starts in goal. Berenschot earned five saves at Southeastern while Evans tallied six saves at West Florida.
  • The No. 3 Lander Bearcats opened the 2019 season 2-0 defeating Alabama Huntsville (2-1) and West Alabama (3-0).
  • Max Bolton netted a pair of goals against West Alabama on his way to tallying two goals and an assist during the opening weekend.
  • Robbie Young, Tom Marriott, and Max McNulty have scored a goal.
  • Goalkeeper Jacob Withers enters the week with five saves.
  • Lander will face Newberry on Wednesday, September 11 before hosting Saint Leo.
  • Friday marks the first-ever meeting between the Bearcats and the Lions.
  • The USC Aiken Pacers opened the year with a 1-1 record. The Pacers took a loss (2-0) in their home opener again Newberry followed by an overtime win at King (1-0).
  • Ricard Saintil drilled the game-winner, assisted by David Box in the 95' minute.
  • Between the pipes, Kenneth Kalek has earned five saves.
  • The Pacers and Lions last met in 1996; Saint Leo earned a 7-1 victory.
  • Saint Leo returns to the course after a week off as they travel to the Mountain Dew Invitational. The Lions saw a pair of first place finishes as both the men and women took the crown at the Florida Tech Invitational.
  • On the men's side, the Lions saw four runners in the top five spot with Shawn Bell second, Tadgh McGinty in third, Shane Bracken in fourth, and Felix Nadeborn in fifth.
  • The women also had four of the top five runners last week with Ashley Lindeman and Paige Patterson placing first and second as teammates Aoife Mahony and Tania Jarreau took fourth and fifth.
  • Both teams look to improve their place from a year ago where the men's squad took 7th out of 22 and the women's team took 11th out of 27.
