SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University is pleased to announce that Marcal Lazenby has been named vice president of student life and athletics. Most recently, he served the university as vice president of athletics, wellness, and recreation. In this expanded role, Lazenby will oversee the newly established Student Life Division while continuing to lead Saint Leo Athletics.

The Student Life Division will include residential life, student engagement and leadership, campus ministry, student conduct, the Center for Student Wellbeing, the Derek J. Mitchell Collegiate Recovery Program, campus auxiliary dining, and other services that support the student experience.

Lazenby will focus on bringing these areas together to improve communication, encourage collaboration, and create a more connected experience for students. His leadership will also support stronger partnerships between academics, athletics, student organizations, residential life, dining, and campus programs.

"Marcal brings a deep commitment to our students and to creating a connected campus culture," said Dr. Jim Burkee, university president. "He understands that the student experience extends beyond the classroom. This new role gives us an opportunity to bring our community closer together, strengthen coordination across campus, and create an even more engaging Saint Leo experience for our students."

Since joining Saint Leo's senior leadership team, Lazenby has helped guide significant growth across athletics, wellness, and recreation. Saint Leo Athletics now supports 20 varsity sports, four junior varsity programs, and several club and competitive teams. During his tenure, the department has expanded participation opportunities, strengthened campus partnerships, improved athletic facilities, and celebrated major competitive accomplishments, including the 2026 NCAA Division II Softball National Championship.

Lazenby also serves on the board of directors for the Tampa Bay Sports Commission and as chair of the Sunshine State Conference Athletic Directors and Senior Woman Administrators Committee. His leadership philosophy centers on visibility, accountability, relationship building, and creating opportunities for students to feel connected to the university.

"I am honored and excited to take on this expanded responsibility," said Lazenby. "My goal is to make sure our students know they are supported, valued, and connected. We are going to create more opportunities for students to get involved, build relationships, celebrate one another, and take pride in being part of the Saint Leo community.
