#2 Tampa Tops Saint Leo in Doubleheader

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University baseball team fell victim to timely hits from the second-ranked Spartans of the University of Tampa Saturday afternoon as the Spartans swept the doubleheader, 15-5 and 5-2.
 
The Lions drop to 14-10 on the season and 3-6 in league action while the Spartans improved to 20-5 and 6-3 in SSC play.
 
Senior Derek Gibree and junior Amir Wright led the Lions on the day as they each picked up four hits over the two contests. Gibree went 2-for-4 in each of the two games while Wright started the day with a 3-for-4 performance in game one and went 1-for-5 in game two. Gibree finished with a double, an RBI and a run scored while Wright had a home run, an RBI, a run scored, a stolen base and a walk.
 
Freshmen Logan Flood, Mike Wyman and Alec Villanueva were the only other Lions with RBI on the day as they each finished with one.  Villanueva added a pinch hit triple to his season tally while redshirt freshman Paul Coumoulos picked up the only other extra base hit with a double.
 
Saint Leo saw a stellar pitching performance in game two from fresha=man Ruddy Gomez who came on in relief and pitched 4.0 innings of shutout baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out seven.
 
Shane Haight suffered the loss in game one while Ryan Nolan took the defeat in game two.  
 
The Lions will head out of conference next weekend as they travel to West Alabama for a three-game series beginning Saturday, March 23.
