Saint Leo Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Saint Leo University baseball team suffered a pair of close losses Saturday afternoon and evening. The Lions traveled to Livingston, Ala. to take on the University of West Alabama Tigers. UWA walked-off with a 12-11 victory in game one and edged out the Lions in a seven-inning game two, 3-1.
 
The Lions drop to 14-12 overall while the Tigers improved to 13-11.
 
Senior Brett Coffel had a productive day at the plate for the Lions as he finished 4-for-5 over the two contests with a home run, two RBI, three runs scored and three walks. Seniors Peyton Isaacson and Jared Morello each had three hits on the day. Isaacson tallied a trio of extra base knocks including two doubles and a home run. He drove in five runs and scored twice himself. Morello had a double and two runs scored.  
 
Redshirt freshman Paul Coumoulos and freshman Mike Wyman each had a pair of hits. Wyman added a pair of RBI as well.
 
The two Lion pitchers who suffered losses on the day never gave up an earned run on the diamond. Junior Joey Antonopoulos pitched the final inning of game one and gave up a pair of hits but an error allowed the lead runner to reach third with one out. A sacrifice fly ended the contest 12-11. Sophomore McCabe Sargent suffered the L in game two as he went 4.2 innings while starting the game. He scattered four hits and four walks while striking out five. In the decisive fifth, an early error extended the inning which allowed three runs to score, all unearned.
 
Freshman Ruddy Gomez made his second career start in game one while pitching 2.0 innings. He struck out three while walking three and allowing four hits.
 
West Alabama struck first in game one, plating four runs in the very first inning. The Lions responded in the third as Saint Leo sent five runners across the plate. The Tigers immediately tied the game in the bottom of the third with a solo run.
 
The Lions retook the lead in the fourth with three runs coming off the bat of Isaacson as he sent a three-run home run over the right centerfield fence. West Alabama cut its deficit to one in the fifth with a pair of runs and then retook the lead in the sixth with four runs, 11-8.
 
Saint Leo once again responded with two runs in the seventh and then tied the game in the eighth as Coffel hit a solo home run to left field. The game would end in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly with one out on the board.
 
The Lions scored an early run in the second game as Isaacson doubled down the left field line in the very first inning which scored Morello who had reached on a single earlier in the inning. The game would swing West Alabama's way as the Lions had a three error inning in the fifth which led to three runs.
 
The Lions will close out the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
