Lions Ledger: Swimming in N.C.; Hoops Open SSC Play against Florida Tech

  • The Lions will send a small contingent to the Sheraton/Le Meridien Fall Frenzy invitational hosted by Queens University in Charlotte, N.C. The rest of the squad will travel to Melbourne, Fla. to take part in the Panther Invite on Sunday.
  • Yann Corbel, Matija Rafaj and Kosta Mitrovic will represent the men's team in Charlotte while Annie Lindstrom will be the lone women's team member in attendance. Corbel and Rafaj will compete in the 500, 200 and 1,650 freestyle in consecutive days while Mitrovic will focus on the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Lindstrom will take to the pool imn the 50 free, 100 butterfly and 100 free.
  • The men are currently 1-1 on the season after defeating Rollins 165-97 to open the season and falling 136.5-125.5 at Florida Southern. Sophomore Hampus Lovinge has carried the torch so far this season after being named Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Week after the Lions' first two meets.
  • The women are a perfect 2-0 with wins at Rollins and at Florida Southern. Sophomore Vittoria Bonsanti Feniello has been leading the way and was named Sunshine State Conference Swimmer of the Week earlier this season.
  • Saint Leo cross country's look for its first national championship after each advancing to the national championship following a third place finish at the NCAA South Regional in Lakeland.
  • The Lions reach the national championship for the first time since 2017 where the Green and Gold saw a 21st place finish by the women and a 30th place finish by the men.
  • At the South Regional, Saint Leo saw four women's runners inside the top-25 of the 120 field and earn All-South Region honors in Paige Patterson, Ashley Lindeman, Tania Jarreau, and Sintayehu Vissa. Patterson led the group on the day with an eighth-place finish in a time of 22:23.89.
  • At the South Regiona, the Lions saw four men's runners inside the top-25 on the 10K course and earn All-South Region honors, with one just missing the honors. Tadgh McGinty, Shawn Bell, Shane Bracken, and Felix Nadeborn all finished inside the top-25 and earned the nod while Blake Watson finished under one-second behind 25th place. McGinty finished in a time of 32:48.87.

  • Saint Leo returned to the win column Wednesday night in a confident, 80-54, win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. Abby Zeitsiff paced the Lions with a career-high 14 points alongside of Alex Button and Amanda Ulrich each with 12 points. Alani Gallagher grabbed 10 rebounds off the glass.
  • On the season, Gallagher averages a double-double scoring 14.4 points per game and 10 rebounds per game. The junior forward leads the Sunshine State Conference (SSC) in blocks with eight, averaging 1.6 stops a game.
  • Ulrich, a true freshman, has made herself a playmaker with a team-high 15 assists in the early season.
  • Florida Tech grabbed a 71-57 win at Flagler on Tuesday. Aniquah Swan earned a game-high 14 points while Amanda Allen recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
  • On the season, November Morton leads the Panthers' offense with 16.5 points per game. Swan (13.8) and Allen (12.6) also average double-digits.
  • Last meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 13 the Lions defeated the Panthers 58-52 in Melbourne, Fla. for the season sweep. Last year in the Bowman Center, Saint Leo defended its den 67-61 on Wednesday, Jan. 9.
  • Saint Leo opens SSC play against Florida Tech on a four-game win streak after dropping the first game of the season to no. 16 Ala.-Huntsville 56-48. The Lions have since ripped off four straight over Montevallo (71-58), Georgia College (76-52), Flagler (74-45), and Puerto Rico – Mayaguez (83-51).
  • The Lions allow just 52.4 points per game and average 70.4 points per game, led by Kyran McClure at 16 ppg. Isaiah Hill is second on the team in scoring with 14.8 ppg.
  • The Green and Gold haul in 42 rebounds per game to opponents 34 where Yalen Reed leads all rebounders with 48 on the season, 9.6 per game. Wade Coomer is second on the team at 6.4 per game.
  • Florida Tech enters the weekend matchup on a two-game win streak with wins over Johnson (FL) 111-71 and Puerto Rico – Bayamon 81-63.
  • The Panthers average 87.8 points per game but allow 78.5 per game as Sesan Russell leads the way with 25.8 points per game. Three others average double-figures in Runako Ziegler (15.0), Mekhii Noble (11.8), and Jalen Hodges (10.0).
  • History Saint Leo holds an 18-9 record against Florida Tech and are on a three-game win streak over the Panthers. The Lions took down the Panthers 81-79 in Melbourne in the last matchup where Kyran McClure led the Lions with 23 points while it was Derek Murphy for FT that led all scorers with 36 points.
  • The Lions hold an 11-2 home record against the Panthers and have scored 2021 total points in the series, averaging 74.85 points.
