Lions Top Three NCAA Statistical Categories in the Spring

Jul 27, 2018

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Two individuals and one team from Saint Leo University were named 2018 NCAA Division II statistical champions as announced by the NCAA Statistics Department. Men's lacrosse led the nation in shot percentage in 2018 while senior Kyle Pauwels was named the individual champion for shot percentage. Junior Peyton Isaacson represented the Lions' baseball program by leading the NCAA in saves this season as well.

The men's lacrosse team, which advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship this season, led the way in shot percentage at .384, nearly 20 percentage points higher than second place Merrimack (.365) while Pauwels himself turned in a .596 percentage to top the nation by over 30 percentage points. Taylor Davis of Colorado State Pueblo finished in second at .563. This marks the third time in which Pauwels has led the NCAA in shot percentage including the past two seasons at Saint Leo and his freshman campaign at Pfeiffer.

Shot percentage is calculated by taking the number of goals scored divided by the number of shots on the season. Pauwels took 23 more shots than second place Davis but also scored 16 more goals.

Men's lacrosse also finished in the top-10 in clearing percentage (3rd), win percentage (6th), assists per game (7th) and points per game (8th) in 2018. Individually, Jake Gilmour placed eighth in assists per game while Thomas Tatarian took sixth in saves per game and seventh in save percentage.

Isaacson tied for the NCAA lead with 14 saves on the season as he also tied the Saint Leo program record in the category. He shares the 2018 championship with Trevor Dudar of Northwest Missouri State who also had 14 saves. Isaacson achieved the number in just 21 appearances on the mound while Dudar pitched in 27 games for the Bearcats.
