Charlie Kurtenbach and
Thomas Tatarian of the No. 5 Saint Leo men's lacrosse team were named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division II Team of the Week today (April 25), for competition held April 16-22, the USILA national office announced. This marks the second weekly honor for both Kurtenbach and Tatarian this season and the eighth honor for the Saint Leo men's lacrosse program this season. It is also just the second time this year that two Lions have appeared on the same Team of the Week.
Kurtenbach scored six goals and had one assist while posting a seven-point week helping the Lions to the program's first-ever Sunshine State Conference regular season title. Saint Leo closed the regular season 2-0 on the road at Tampa (W, 10-9) and Florida Tech (W, 16-13). Kurtenbach's seven points were paired with three ground balls and one caused turnover. The junior attacker compiled a .545 shooting percentage while placing .636 perfect on frame. Kurtenbach racked up five points in the win over Tampa with four goals and one assist. He then netted two more goals at Florida Tech.
Tatarian's work in the net allowed Saint Leo to clinch the regular season title. Saint Leo went undefeated in SSC play, going 7-0, including the pair of wins last week, while compiling an overall season record of 13-1. Tatarian faced 82 shots over the final two games of the regular season while making 22 saves. He compiled a .500 save percentage for the week including picking up six saves against the Spartans and 16 saves in the title clinching win at Florida Tech.
Up next for the Lions is the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Championship which will be hosted at University Turf Stadium on the campus of Saint Leo University. The top-seeded Lions will face the No. 4 seed Rollins at 7 pm Thursday night. No. 2 seed Florida Tech and No. 3 seed Tampa will battle prior to the Lions and Tars at 3 pm. The Championship match is scheduled for Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.
