Game Recap: Baseball |

#17 Tampa hands #10 Baseball first SSC loss of season; snaps 15 game winstreak

TAMPA, Fla. – No. 10 Saint Leo baseball gave up four runs in the third inning, on a throwing error, that haunted the Lions' comeback on the road at No. 17 Tampa. Saint Leo scored two runs in the eighth and ninth, but fell just short to the Spartans, 5-3 for the first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season.

Saint Leo (19-3, 6-1 SSC) scored first and last in the game, but allowed a costly four run third inning that would come back to haunt the Lions. Trailing in the game after the first three innings is nothing new to the Green and Gold, where Saint Leo has came back to win five games after being tied or trailing.

The loss snaps the Lions win streak of 15 games, where the last time the Green and Gold lost a game, they dropped two straight and ripped off the next 15.

Tyler Bauman suffered his first loss of the year while on the mound after going 5.2 innings with six hits and five runs, three earned, while picking up three strikeouts.

Lane Stancil paced the Lions from the box, going 2-for-4 while Peyton Isaacson, Chase Turner, Zach Scott, and Derek Gibree all picked up one hit on the night (1-for-4). Jake Sims joined Isaacson and Scott with runs scored where Isaacson and Gibree drove in the lone two RBI of the game, with one a piece.

Saint Leo scored first as Chase Turner singled scoring Zach Scott. Tampa answered with one in the bottom of the second on a double to make it a 1-1 game.

A four-run second haunted the Lions as three runs came across on a throwing error before the Green and Gold could end the inning, Tampa 5-1.

Peyton Isaacson hit the lone long ball of the night, blasting a solo home run in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-2.

In the top of the ninth, Jake Sims came in to pinch hit and drew the walk before coming in to score on a Derek Gibree single, making it 5-3 Tampa. The Spartans recorded the final out via a groundout.

No. 10 Saint Leo and No. 17 Tampa return to action on March 17 for a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader, starting at 1 p.m.
