Lions Drop Conference Opener to the Moccasins

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University volleyball team dropped its Sunshine State Conference opener Friday night as Florida Southern College visited the Marion Bowman Activities Center. The Moccasins jumped out early and went on to win 3-0 over the Lions.
 
The loss drops Saint Leo's record to 4-7 on the year and 0-1 in SSC action. The Mocs improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league action.
 
Freshman Shelby Toney and sophomore Alexa Gandolfo led the offensive attack for Saint Leo as Toney finished with a team-best seven kills while Gandolfo added six. Toney added six digs and a block to her effort while Gandolfo posted one dig. Sophomore Bridget Gallagher was the lone setter to reach double-digits as she handed out 10 assists. She also chipped in five digs and a service ace. Freshman Jansen Warbritton, Toney and senior Sabrina Valentin all tied for the team lead with six digs while Gallagher and junior Mia Moser finished with five.
 
The Mocs were led by Lindsay Piktel who finished with a match-high 10 kills. Libero Nako Sasaki finished with 23 digs and three service aces while setter Brielle Mullen chipped in a double-double with 19 assists and 11 digs.
 
Florida Southern won in straight sets 25-9, 25-11 and 25-20.
 
The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as Saint Leo welcomes Eckerd to the Marion Bowman Activities Center for a 4 p.m. match.
