Baseball Ignites for 27 Runs in Game One, Splits Twinbill with Nova Southeastern

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team concluded its Sunshine State Conference (SSC) series with a split doubleheader on Saturday at home. The Lions tallied a 27-6 victory in game one before dropping game two by a 12-10 margin.

In game one, junior Abrahan Rios gave the Lions a 3-2 lead after an RBI-double in the third followed by an eruption by the Green & Gold with eight runs in the fourth to claim an 11-2 advantage. Saint Leo added two more runs in the fifth as senior Amai Rivera-Martinez laced an two-run double. The Lions continued the onslaught with 10 runs in the sixth to hold a commanding 23-2 cushion. In the seventh, Saint Leo pushed its lead to 27-2 before the Sharks answered with four runs in the eighth.

On the mound, junior Howard Flynn started and pitched 6.0 innings. He registered two strikeouts and surrendered two runs (one earned) on seven hits. In relief, senior Harrison Miller notched two strikeouts while senior Wyatt Flack recorded one.

In game two featured six lead changes and a late push from the Lions that fell short. While trialing in the 6-5 in the eighth, the Lions ignited for four runs to claim a 9-6 lead, however, Nova Southeastern answered in the top of the ninth to retake a lead with a 12-9 margin.

On the mound, junior Cian Phillips started and posted six strikeouts as he allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits. In relief, freshman Aiden Smarrito and junior Jackson Wohlers struck out two batters.
