SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team concluded its Sunshine State Conference (SSC) series with a split doubleheader on Saturday at home. The Lions tallied a 27-6 victory in game one before dropping game two by a 12-10 margin.
In game one, junior
Abrahan Rios gave the Lions a 3-2 lead after an RBI-double in the third followed by an eruption by the Green & Gold with eight runs in the fourth to claim an 11-2 advantage. Saint Leo added two more runs in the fifth as senior
Amai Rivera-Martinez laced an two-run double. The Lions continued the onslaught with 10 runs in the sixth to hold a commanding 23-2 cushion. In the seventh, Saint Leo pushed its lead to 27-2 before the Sharks answered with four runs in the eighth.
On the mound, junior Howard Flynn started and pitched 6.0 innings. He registered two strikeouts and surrendered two runs (one earned) on seven hits. In relief, senior
Harrison Miller notched two strikeouts while senior
Wyatt Flack recorded one.
In game two featured six lead changes and a late push from the Lions that fell short. While trialing in the 6-5 in the eighth, the Lions ignited for four runs to claim a 9-6 lead, however, Nova Southeastern answered in the top of the ninth to retake a lead with a 12-9 margin.
On the mound, junior
Cian Phillips started and posted six strikeouts as he allowed four runs (all earned) on eight hits. In relief, freshman
Aiden Smarrito and junior
Jackson Wohlers struck out two batters.
The Lions will return to action on Wednesday, April 22 as they host Florida Southern in a non-conference game starting at 6 p.m.
