Baseball Falls in Midweek Non-SSC Game Against Florida Southern

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo baseball team lost its midweek non-conference game versus Florida Southern at home on Wednesday night by an 8-6 margin.

Junior Abrahan Rios gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead following an RBI-single in the first, however, the Mocs answered in the third with a pair of runs to claim a 2-1 edge. Rios helped the Green & Gold regain its lead with an RBI-double down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2 before senior Amai Rivera-Martinez blasted a two-run to right field as Saint Leo led 4-2.

Over the night few innings, the Mocs scored five unanswered runs as they mounted a 7-4 lead in the seventh until the Lions tallied a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to trim their deficit to 7-6. For the remainder of the game, Florida Southern held the Lions at bay for a win.

On the mound, freshman Aiden Smarrito started and pitched 5.2 innings while recording two strikeouts. He surrendered six runs (all earned) on 11 hits and issuing two walks. In relief, senior Harrison Miller pitched 2.2 innings and notched a strikeout.

Saint Leo returns to action on Friday, April 24 as it hosts Lander in a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
