SAINT LEO, Fla. — Saint Leo Univermen's lacrosse defeated the no.15 Flagler College Saints 17–7. Leading the Lions was junior Greg Palmer with 4 goals, and junior Andrew Graham who controlled 21-23 face offs and added 15 groundballs. Prior to today's contest, Saint Leo athletics named the lacrosse stadium the Jody Luihn Family Stadium.
First Quarter:
Saint Leo wasted little time getting on the board as sophomore Brady Moltisanti opened the scoring off an assist from senior Ben Baker. After Flagler briefly tied the game at 1–1, the Lions erupted with four straight goals. Moltisanti struck again, senior John Raucci added an unassisted tally, sophomore Maverick Chernoff finished a feed from senior Aidan Knoetgen, and Moltisanti completed his hat trick during the surge. Baker capped the run with a man up goal to give Saint Leo a 6–2 lead after the first quarter.
Second Quarter:
The Lions continued to push the pace in the second. Raucci opened the quarter with another goal before Knoetgen found the net midway through the frame. Sophomore AJ Carlo and Anderson Smith each added goals during a quick scoring stretch that put Saint Leo firmly in control. Raucci recorded his third goal late in the quarter, and Greg Palmer beat the buzzer with a goal in the final seconds to extend the Lions' lead to 12–3 at halftime.
Third Quarter:
Saint Leo maintained control after the break. Ben Baker scored early to push the lead to ten, and Palmer added a man up goal midway through the quarter after a Flagler penalty. The Lions' defense limited the Saints' chances while maintaining possession, allowing Saint Leo to carry a 14–5 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Fourth Quarter:
Flagler opened the final period with a goal, but Saint Leo quickly responded. Palmer scored twice in the quarter to complete a four-goal afternoon, both set up by Knoetgen. Junior Brayden Stellwagen added the final goal of the game off an assist from Alex Clark as the Lions secured the 17–7 victory.
Saint Leo finished with 46 shots and 44 ground balls, dominating possession throughout the contest. Palmer led the offense with four goals and one assist, while Moltisanti and Raucci each added three goals. Knoetgen orchestrated the attack with one goal and five assists, and goalkeeper senior Drew Wheeler made eight saves in the win.
The men's lacrosse team travels out to Saint Louis where they will play the Maryville Saints next Sat. March 14.
