No.15 Men’s Lacrosse’s Comeback Falls Short On The Road To No.7 Saints

ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Saint Leo Lions university men's lacrosse rallied late but fell in overtime to the Maryville Saints 12–11, Saturday afternoon. 

First Quarter: 

Maryville opened the game with three straight goals before Saint Leo responded with a man-up goals from seniors Thomas Nelan and another from Owen Wills. The Saints added two more late scores, but Wills found the net with one second remaining to cut the deficit to 5–3 after the first. 

Second Quarter

The Lions continued to battle back as seniors John Raucci and Greg Palmer each scored in the period. Maryville answered offensively and maintained the advantage, taking an 8–5 lead into halftime. 

Third Quarter: 

Saint Leo trimmed the deficit in the third as Raucci scored again, senior Aidan Knoetgen added a goal off an assist from sophomore Brady Moltisanti, and senior Tristan LeBlanc struck late in the period. The Lions closed the gap to 10–8 heading into the fourth. 

Fourth Quarter & OT: 

Knoetgen opened the scoring in the fourth before Maryville briefly extended its lead. Ben Baker delivered two clutch goals in the final two minutes, including the equalizer with 40 seconds remaining to force overtime at 11–11. The lions ultimately secured the 12–11 win with the game winning goal early in overtime. 

Stat Leaders: 

Raucci, Knoetgen, and Baker each led Saint Leo with two goals, while Owen Wills also scored twice. Palmer contributed one goal and one assist, and Knoetgen added an assist for three points. In goal, senior Drew Wheeler anchored the Lions with 11 saves. 

Men's Lacrosse will stay in Saint Louis to play the Lewis University Flyers this Mon. at 12PM EST.
