Long Ball Powers #15 Softball to Doubleheader Sweep at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The 15th-ranked Saint Leo University softball team extended its win streak to seven games following a five-homer day by the Lions. The Green & Gold took game one 9-1 in five innings before completing the doubleheader sweep with a 6-4 win in the second game. Abigail Hynes hit her first and second career home runs on Thursday. Sydney Cline's first inning RBI base hit in game one gave her 100 career hits. Tierney Hocquard improved to 6-1. Hocquard recorded her first save of the season in game two. Saint Leo improves to 12-2-1 overall and 5-0 in SSC play, while the Tars fall to 7-4 overall and 3-2 in SSC play.
 
Izzy LaRoche led the Lions in game one at the plate with a three-for-three day including a home run, a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Cline was two-for-three with an RBI and a run scored. Nia DeBenedittis was two-for-two with a two RBI, and two runs scored and a double. In the circle, Tierney Hocquard improved to 6-1 as she went 5.0 innings allowing just a single run on six hits while striking out four.
 
Game two saw a trio of softballs go over the fence for the visitors. Hynes hit her second of the day, Briana Neal hit her team leading third home run and Alexis Barber left the ballpark for the first time in 2026. Haleigh Thomas made the start allowing a run on two hits in 4.1 innings pitched as she struck out six and walked six. Chloe Hocquard got the final two outs of the fifth inning stranding a pair of base runners. T. Hocquard pitched the final two innings allowing three runs on two hits while striking out two.

GAME 1: #15 SAINT LEO 9, ROLLINS 1 (5 inns.)
  • Sydney Cline's RBI base hit in the first inning gave her 100 career hits and the Lions a 1-0 lead.
  • Izzy LaRoche got the home run derby for the Lions started with a two-run shot in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Rollins got one back in the bottom half of the inning but that's where their scoring ended and Saint Leo's was just beginning.
  • Saint Leo put up four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Abigail Hynes belted her first career home run to put the Lions back up by three. Nia DeBenedittis sent a base hit up the middle to score Alexis Barber and Sydney Cline as Saint Leo took a 6-1 lead. DeBenedittis came crossed the plate for the seventh run and a 7-1 lead off an RBI double down the left field line by LaRoche.
  • DeBenedittis scored a second straight run for the Lions on a fielder's choice off the bat of Gabi Olavarria. Briana Neal followed with a sacrifice bunt to score LaRoche as Saint Leo's lead grew to eight.
  • The bottom of the fifth got off to a rocky start for Tierney Hocquard as the Tars opened the inning with three straight hits to load the bases. The senior pitcher settled in and struck out the next two batters, one looking and one swinging. The game ended on a foul out to first base to give Saint Leo a 9-1 win for a second straight game.
 
GAME 2: #15 SAINT LEO 6, ROLLINS 4
  • Rollins opened the second game with a first inning run, giving Haleigh Thomas some trouble in the first inning.
  • Saint Leo manufactured its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. Shyanne Waller scored on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Barber.
  • The Lions hit a pair of solo shots in the top of the fifth to take 3-1 lead.
  • Rollins added a run in the bottom of the sixth cutting the Lions lead to just one run.
  • Cline hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the seventh to put the visitors back up by a pair. Alexis Barber smacked a ball over the centerfield wall with what proved to be the winning home run.
  • The home team put together a threat in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Tars plated a pair of runs with a base hit down the left field line. T. Hocquard got the final out on a fly ball to left center to earn her first save of the season.
  • Thomas got the win as she went 4.1 innings pinched allowing one run on two hits while striking out six and walking six.

Saint Leo and Rollins return to the diamond on Friday morning to complete the season series with a single game at 11 a.m. in Winter Park.
