SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw against No. 13 West Florida on Saturday night at University Turf Stadium in a non-conference game.
The Argonauts struck first in the 41st minute to give West Florida a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Despite the deficit, the Lions came out strong in the second half and found the equalizer in the 64th minute. Sophomore
Luis Gaitan delivered his first goal of the season off an assist from
Anel Rojas, leveling the score at 1-1.
From there, both defenses held firm. Goalkeeper James Knudsen turned away four shots in a steady performance between the posts, while the Lions' back line withstood late UWF pressure, including a flurry of corner kicks in the final minutes.
Saint Leo finished with a narrow 8-7 edge in shots and led 7-5 in corner kicks.
The result moves the Lions to 0-1-1 on the year while the Argonauts also stand at 0-1-1.
Saint Leo will hit the road to face Emmanuel (Ga.) in a non-conference bout on Wednesday, September 10th.
