ORLANDO, Fla. - The fifteenth-ranked Saint Leo men's lacrosse team dropped an SSC contest 15-9 against the Rollins Tars on Wednesday evening. With the loss, the Lions fall to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play. With their win, the Tars improved to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in conference play.
Rollins wasted no time scoring, with the opening goal coming seven seconds into the game. Saint Leo got on the scoreboard thanks to a pair of goals from freshman Maverick Chernoff. The Tars scored four more goals throughout the quarter and despite a goal from junior Tristan Leblanc, the Lions trailed by two after 15 minutes. The scoring continued throughout the second quarter for the Tars as they scored four straight goals to begin the period. Goals from junior Aidan Knoetgen and Chernoff cut the deficit to four as the first half drew to a close.
The Tars scored two quick goals to open the third quarter to claim a six-goal lead. Goals from sophomore Brayden Stellwagen and Knoetgen cut the lead back to four before junior Owen Wills scored to make it a three-goal game. Rollins scored in the dying seconds of the quarter to lead by four as the game entered its final 15 minutes. The Tars controlled a relatively quiet fourth quarter, as they scored three times to counter a Lions goal from junior Thomas Nelan.
Offensively, the Lions were led by Knoetgen who scored two goals and recorded two assists for four points. Chernoff followed with three goals for three points. Nelan finished with one goal and recorded two assists for three points. Defensively, the Green & Gold were led by Wills who recorded three groundballs and caused two turnovers. Junior midfielder Nicolas Conetta recorded three groundballs and caused one turnover. In net, junior Drew Wheeler made eight saves in 30 minutes of action. A halftime swap saw freshman Ethan Williams play 30 minutes in net, where he made five saves.
