#14 Softball Splits Doubleheader, Earns Series Victory Over Lynn

The Lions have now won 28 of their last 31 games.

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Four Lions recorded multi-RBI games as the fourteenth-ranked Saint Leo University Softball team split its Saturday doubleheader against the Lynn Fighting Knights. Saint Leo is now 36-11 on the season and 19-8 in the SSC. Lynn is now 21-26 on the season and 7-20 in the SSC.

In the first game, sophomore Sydney Cline led the way with three hits and four RBI, including a bases-clearing double in the fourth inning. Two other Lions recorded a multi-hit game, sophomore Alexis Barber tallied two hits and an RBI, while senior Hope Epps recorded three hits and scored two runs. Junior second baseman Briana Neal also scored two runs while driving in two runs. In the circle, freshman Chloe Hocquard was excellent, pitching a five-inning complete game, two-hit shutout while striking out five batters.

In the second game, the Lions offense was led by senior Shyanne Waller. She recorded two hits and two RBI. Neal drove in two-runs with her fourth home run of the season. Barber delivered two hits, including a triple in the third inning. The Lions sent three pitchers into the circle, with junior Haleigh Thomas earning the start. Thomas went two-and-two-thirds innings, allowing five runs (none earned), while striking out four batters. Freshman Bella DeJulio entered in relief in the third inning. She pitching two-and-a-third innings of one-run softball, allowed two hits, and struck out two batters. In the sixth inning, junior Tierney Hocquard entered in relief and surrendered one run in one inning of work.

Game 1: #14 Saint Leo 9, Lynn 0 (5 innings)

  • Cline put Saint Leo on the board first with an RBI single in the third inning.

  • The lead quickly doubled as junior Lindsay Corazzini drove in Barber with an RBI single.

  • Junior catcher Hailey Beuerlein sent Epps home with a one-out double in the fourth inning to give the Lions a 3-0 lead.

  • Saint Leo proceeded to load the bases, and Cline sent all three runs home with a clutch double to centerfield.

  • Neal reached on an error in the fifth inning and advanced to second base, while two more Lions runs crossed home plate.

  • Barber then sent Neal home with an RBI single to right field, giving Saint Leo a nine-run advantage.

  • C. Hocquard survived a lead-off triple by Lynn and struck out two batters in the fifth inning to secure the run-rule victory for Saint Leo.
     

Game 2: Lynn 7, #14 Saint Leo 6

  • Thomas struck out the side in the first inning, with all three batters going down swinging.

  • Waller put the Lions on the board first with a two-run double to centerfield in the top of the second inning.

  • The Fighting Knights responded with their opening run, scoring on an error in the bottom of the second.

  • Saint Leo plated a third run with a sacrifice fly from sophomore Maddie Antioco in the top of the third inning.

  • Lynn responded once again, this time with a two-out, two-run double to tie the game at three in the bottom of the third.

  • Lynn added two more runs with a two-RBI single with two outs in the third inning.

  • Neal delivered a two-run home run to tie the game at five in the fifth inning.

  • With the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning, Beuerlein grounded out to second, but recorded the go-ahead RBI as Corazzini scored from third.

  • Lynn responded with a two-run single off of T. Hocquard to reclaim the lead in the bottom of the sixth.

  • Despite their leadoff batter reaching base, the Lions were unable to replicate the seventh-inning comeback from one night earlier, and fell 7-6.

Saint Leo returns to Mary Cannon Cabot Softball Stadium on Friday, May 2, to open its final series of the regular season against the Eckerd College Tritons. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
