Saint Leo University Names Charles Marshall as Head Women’s Basketball Coach

Veteran NCAA Division II Leader Brings Proven Success and High-Energy Style to the Lions

Mar 26, 2025

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Saint Leo University Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation Marcal Lazenby has officially announced the hiring of Charles Marshall as the next head coach of the Saint Leo women's basketball program.

Marshall, a decorated coach with over a decade of head coaching experience at the NCAA Division II level, joins the Lions after leading nationally recognized programs at both West Virginia State University and Glenville State College. Known for his fast-paced style of play and his ability to develop high-performing student-athletes, Marshall has amassed nearly 200 career wins and a reputation for building competitive, championship-caliber teams.

"We are excited to welcome Coach Marshall to the Saint Leo family," said Lazenby. "Having worked alongside Charles at Glenville State, I know firsthand the passion, energy, and commitment he brings to a program. He has a strong track record of developing student-athletes both on and off the court, and I am confident he will lead our women's basketball team to new heights."

During his nine-year tenure at West Virginia State, Marshall transformed the Yellow Jackets into a consistent force in the Mountain East Conference (MEC). He led the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, two 20-win seasons, and multiple trips to the MEC Tournament Finals—including the program's first-ever conference tournament runner-up finish in 2024. His teams led the NCAA in scoring (2023) and offensive rebounds for three consecutive years (2023–2025).

Prior to WVSU, Marshall helmed Glenville State from 2013 to 2016, leading the Pioneers to a 29-4 record in 2014 and capturing both the MEC regular season and tournament championships. That year, Glenville State ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region and led the nation in scoring, three-point field goals made per game, and assist-to-turnover ratio.

In total, Marshall has recruited and developed 13 All-MEC players, including multiple All-Region selections, two Freshman of the Year honorees, and one All-American. He has also emphasized community involvement, fiscal responsibility, and strong campus relationships throughout his career.

"I am honored and excited to join Saint Leo University as the head women's basketball coach," said Marshall. "This is a special place with a strong commitment to academic and athletic excellence, and I look forward to building a culture of success within our program. I can't wait to get started with our student-athletes and begin this new chapter."

A proud graduate of Berea College, Marshall played collegiately for the Mountaineers, helping lead them to the NAIA Final Four. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the Berea College Athletic Hall of Fame. He and his wife, Sharonda, are the proud parents of three daughters: Jordyn, Jayli, and Jiya.
