Marcal Lazenby assumed the title of Vice President of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation in 2025. This followed a short stint as the Director of Athletics and Wellness & Recreation in November 2023 after serving as the interim for six months. Lazenby has been a dedicated member of the Saint Leo Athletic Department since joining the staff in August 2017.

"There were certainly many quality candidates in our pool but with Marcal's experience as an athletic director and the exceptional work he has done since arriving at Saint Leo this was an easy selection," said Reidy. "Marcal is deserving of this promotion as he is a valued member of not only our department, but the entire university community."

Since stepping into a leadership role, Lazenby has championed the return of men’s and women’s cross country and track & field, while also launching women’s flag football as a new varsity sport at Saint Leo—demonstrating his commitment to expanding opportunities for student-athletes. He also introduced the highly successful Casino Night fundraising event, which has quickly become a cornerstone initiative in supporting Saint Leo Athletics.

Lazenby joined Saint Leo University after nine years at his alma mater, Glenville State College. For more than three years, he has transformed policies and created workflows to better support the needs of the Saint Leo Athletic Department. He established the NCAA Compliance Committee and launched the "Compliance Matters" rules education newsletter. In recognition of his contributions, Lazenby was named the 2018-19 Saint Leo Athletics Employee of the Year and received the Core Value Award for "Community" during Community Day in August 2019. He was also appointed the university’s Athletics Diversity and Inclusion Designee prior to the 2020-21 season.

Lazenby began his professional career at Glenville State in 2008, first as an Assistant to the President, then as an Academic Coordinator for the College Completion Center, before serving as Assistant Athletic Director for Academics and Diversity and Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance. He held the position of Interim Athletic Director for one year before being elevated to Athletic Director in 2016.

During his tenure at GSC, he ensured compliance with college, conference, and NCAA Division II standards, expanded athletic fundraising, and oversaw facility upgrades. As GSC’s first African-American Athletic Director, Lazenby launched new athletic programs, led community engagement initiatives, and modernized the department’s online presence. He was actively involved with the Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, served as vice chair of the Mountain East Conference Compliance Committee, and was an executive member of the Hidden Promise Scholarship Committee.

Originally from Atlanta, Ga., Lazenby was a member of the Glenville State football team. He served as the starting offensive guard on the 2008 WVIAC Conference Championship team and was a three-time All-Conference selection and All-Region honoree. He graduated from Glenville State in December 2008 before immediately beginning his professional career in collegiate athletics.
