Women's Basketball Opens Season With 53 Point Win, Marshall Wins First Game As Lions Coach

SAINT LEO, Fla. — Saint Leo women's basketball opened its 2025–26 season with a dominant 104–51 win over the University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez at home. The Lions shot 50 percent from the field, forced 35 turnovers, and had 12 players score in Head Coach Charles Marshall's first victory as head coach of the lions.

The lions started off the game with a back and forth first quarter leading 23–17. Graduate student Paula Llovich got the offense started with an early three pointer, while junior Mira Hanna and freshman Jailenn Green added transition baskets as Saint Leo turned defense into offense. The Lions forced 10 first quarter turnovers and held Mayaguez to 30 percent shooting.

The second quarter the floodgates opened for the lions as they outscored Mayaguez 26–8. Sophomore Amy Duggan scored 10 of her 15 points in the period, including a key 3-pointer and multiple fast breaks. Saint Leo's bench ignited the surge as freshman Zoe O'Leary and junior Samiya Fletcher combined for seven points. The Lions' defensive pressure overwhelmed Mayaguez, who committed 11 turnovers in the quarter. Saint Leo entered halftime ahead 49–25.

The third quarter saw similar production posting another 26-point quarter. Freshman guard Macie McNece caught fire from beyond the arc, hitting two of her game high four 3 pointers as she finished with 12 points. Freshman Jocelyn Gagnon added six points and two assists, while the Lions' defense again limited Mayaguez to 22 percent shooting. Saint Leo pushed its lead to 75–40 entering the fourth.

The Lions closed the night with their strongest offensive quarter, scoring 29 points and surpassing the 100-point mark for the first time since November 23rd 2023 against Johnson University. O'Leary posted four points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Hanna and Llovich added steady scoring in their final shifts. Saint Leo shot 63 percent in the quarter, and McNece drilled two more threes to finish off the emphatic season-opening win.
