Fourth-Quarter Surge Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Florida Southern

SAINT LEO, Fla. – With a last-second three-point attempt that fell short, the Saint Leo women's basketball team lost 83-81 at home versus Florida Southern in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Mocs built a 15-3 advantage in the opening quarter before the Lions executed a 7-4 run to finish the first frame to trail 19-10. The Green and Gold jumped started the second quarter with a 7-3 run to cut their deficit to 22-17. Both offenses found their groove as a total of 49 points were second in the second quarter. As the Mocs led by a 31-28 margin, Florida Southern ended the first half with a 12-7 stretch to lead 43-25 at intermission.

In the closing minutes of the game, the Lions hit a few key shots to keep the game within one possession as junior Taydra Simpson laced a three-pointer followed by graduate student Jumoke Adaramoye found the bottom of the net on a jumper from the elbow. However, in the last seconds a three-point attempt from Simpson hit the front iron as the Mocs held on for an 83-18 victory.

Adaramoye notched a career-high 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field while collecting a season-best 16 boards in the process. The Nigeria native also dished out two assists and recorded one steal. Sophomore Olivia Agunzo tallied a career-best 19 points in addition to four assists and three rebounds. Junior Alanis Diaz registered 18 points, four rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals. Both freshman Vanessa McManus and Simpson finished the game with eight points each.

The Lions shot 44.3 percent from the field and went 9-for-21 (42.9 percent) from beyond the three-point line while converting 83.3 percent from the charity stripe.

Saint Leo returns to the court on Wednesday, January 22 as it hosts Lynn in an SSC bout, starting at 5 p.m.
