SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo women's basketball team lost in the final seconds at home versus Lynn in a Sunshine State Conference (SSC) contest on Wednesday evening.
The Fighting Knights started strong, scoring on each of their first four possessions. While junior
Taydra Simpson and sophomore
Olivia Agunzo each connected on three-pointers to kick start the Lions' offense. Redshirt junior
Chynna Mattair closed the quarter strong with two free throws and a deep three-pointer as the Green and Gold led by a 21-18 margin.
In the second quarter, the Lions remained their offensive output by shooting 55.9 percent from the field (5-of-9 FG) entering the media timeout. Lynn's Jess Knight shot a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and scored 8 points. Despite finishing the half by making only two of its last 10 shots, Saint Leo carried an eight-point lead into halftime (38-30).
In the third frame, graduate student
Jumoke Adaramoye and junior
Alanis Diaz combined for nine points, extending the Lions' lead to 12 midway through the third period. The Fighting Knights capitalized on multiple Lions turnovers, cutting the lead to three with 1:57 left in the quarter (49-46).
Lynn went on a 10–0 run early in the final frame, taking the lead by capitalizing on Lions turnovers. In the final seconds, the Lions missed the go-ahead three-pointer.
The Lions were led by Adaramoye, who recorded a career-high 24 points while collecting five boards and one steal. Diaz tallied 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. Agunzo finished the game with 12 points while Mattair registered 10 points.
The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 25 as they travel to face Tampa at 2 p.m. in an SSC bout.
