TAMPA, Fla. – The Saint Leo men's soccer team lost on the road versus #20 Tampa in a non-conference bout on Tuesday night.
The Spartans were on the attack in the beginning of the game as they registered a pair of shot attempts in the opening minutes. In the 23rd minute, junior
Anel Rojas led the Lions into their attacking zone with a shot attempt that was blocked. Junior
Shotaro Kino blasted a shot that was blocked as well in 24th minute. Both teams continued a back-and-forth affair with neither able to gain an edge. At intermission, the score remained 0-0.
In the midway point of the second half, Tampa claimed a 1-0 advantage with a score to the bottom left of the net. During the 76th minute, Saint Leo answered back as junior
Nicholas Sadorf laced his first goal of the season off a feed from freshman
Virgilio Escala to tie the game 1-1. However, less than three minutes later Tampa reclaimed the lead from a header on a corner kick at the 78:36 mark. The Green and Gold only attempted one more shot attempt for the remainder of the game as Sadorf fired one in the 82nd minute.
Tampa out shot Saint Leo 16-12 and held an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Lions recorded 3 corner kicks while the Spartans attempted two.
Junior goalkeeper
Pablo Bas Colomer notched nine saves in the complete-game effort.
Saint Leo returns to the pitch on Saturday, September 28 as it travels to Lakeland, Fla. to face Florida Southern in Sunshine State Conference action, starting at 7 p.m.
