LAKELAND, Fla. – After three different players scored for the Saint Leo men's soccer team in the second half, the Lions rolled to a 3-0 victory at Florida Southern on Sunday night in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action.
At intermission with the score tied at 0-0, Saint Leo was on the attack for the majority of the opening half as it attempted four shots and one corner kick. The Lions' defense contained the Mocs as Florida Southern could only muster one shot attempt and were held without a corner kick in the first half.
Four minutes into the second half, the Mocs turned over possession inside the box to freshman
Virgilio Escala as he quickly registered his team-leading fourth goal of the season to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage. In the 66th minute, Saint Leo applied pressure that led to another turnover by the Mocs with senior
Arthur Bergami lacing his first goal of the season off a left-footed attempt from just outside the box, 2-0. In the last minute of the game, junior
Nicholas Sadorf dished an assist to classmate
Anel Rojas on a cross-ball to give Saint Leo a 3-0 lead, securing the win.
The Lions out shot the Mocs 9-7 while Saint Leo also held the edge with shots on goal (5-2). Florida Southern led in the corner kick category, 2-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
James Knudson registered the complete-game shutout victory while recording a pair of saves as he notched his second shutout of the season.
Saint Leo returns to the pitch on Wednesday, October 2 as it travels to compete against Florida Tech on the road in an SSC bout at 7 p.m.
