MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In a neutral site non-conference contest against Delta State, the Saint Leo men's soccer team tallied a 0-0 draw with the Statesman that featured a combined five shots on goal with 23 shot attempts.
The Lions were out of the gates on the attack as senior
Branddon Silva Ortiz fired a shot in the first 30 seconds of the game that went right of the goal. Delta State answered with a pair of shots in the ninth minute. The Statesmen continued to have opportunities with two attempts and a corner that was stuffed by the Lions' defense during the 18th and 21st minutes. As the stalemate continued, Delta State registered two shot attempts in the closing minutes of the first frame with one being on target. At intermission, the game remained in a scoreless tie.
Senior
Edoardo Degl'Innocenti helped lead the Lions' offense in the second half with a trio of shots in the 47th and 48th minute. Freshmen
Virgilio Escala and
Juan Jimenez kept the pressure on Delta State as they each tallied a shot attempt. The Statesmen countered with three consecutive attempts which included a save from freshman goalkeeper
James Knudson. In the 87th and 88th minute, Degl'Innocenti and Escala each posted a shot attempt that went left of the goal. In the final minutes of regulation, Delta State notched two corner kicks that were sandwiched in between shot attempts, however, the Lions held the Statesmen in check as the game ended in a 0-0 score.
Delta State outshot Saint Leo by 13-11 in addition to holding a 3-2 advantage on shots on goal. The Statesmen also led in corner kicks 5-3
The Lions return to the pitch on Sunday, September 15 as they continue their road trip in Memphis, Tenn. and compete against Christian Brothers in a non-conference bout at 1 p.m.
