Softball Falls 9-2 In Opening Round of 2024 NCAA South Regional to #24 NSU

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Saint Leo University softball opened the 2024 postseason at Auburn University at Montgomery with a first round game in the NCAA Division II South Region 2 against the four seed #24 Nova Southeastern Sharks. Backed behind a five-run first inning the Sharks advanced to the second round with a 9-2 victory over the Lions. Saint Leo will take on the loser of the AUM vs. Spring Hill game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

The Sharks pitching was able to subdue a potent Lions offense limiting them to two runs on eight hits across seven innings.

Alexis Barber went three-for-four in her postseason debut. Briana Neal went two-for-three at the plate and recorded an RBI in the loss.

Haleigh Thomas faced the entire Sharks lineup in the first inning as she allowed five runs on three hits while walking three and striking out one in 0.2 innings pitched. Tiereny Hocquard pitched 4.1 innings in relief allowing four runs on six hits, while walking three and striking out one. Morgan Shannon pitched a perfect bottom of the sixth as she recorded a strikeout.

(4) #24 NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 9, (5) SAINT LEO 2
  • Barber opened the game with a first-pitch base hit through the right side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Shyanne Waller. Baber was stranded on second following a pop up to first and a fly out to center.
  • The Sharks put up a five spot in the bottom of the first to take complete control of the game. Nova Southeastern scored five runs on three hits, including loaded the bases twice both on walks.
  • Saint Leo got at least one base runner in every inning except the top of the sixth.
  • NSU opened the bottom of the third with a base hit and walk to put two on with no outs. Hocquard got the next two batters out on a bunt and a ground out to the pitcher. A pair of two-out base hits and a fielding error allowed the Sharks to plate three more runs to take an 8-0 lead.
  • Hailey Beuerlein opened the top of the fourth with a base hit down the right field line for her only hit of the game. Neal unconventionally advanced the runner to second as she flew out to right and a misplay and a bad throw by the right fielder allowed Beuerlein to tag and make her way to second. Sydney Cline reached on a fielding error by the third baseman which allowed Beuerlein to score from second cutting into the Sharks lead.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, NSU got the run back on a bases loaded hit by pitch.
  • Pinch runner Caroline Barwick scored the second Lions run in top of the fifth on a base hit off the bat of Neal.
  • Saint Leo threatened in the top of the seventh as Barber lead off with a base hit to right for her third hit of the day. Back-to-back ground outs allowed her to advance to third with two outs. Nova Southeastern got the final out to end the game on a ground out to second.
