Softball Defeats SHC 10-0 Before Season Ends with 3-2 Loss to #15 AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Saint Leo University softball team saw its season come to a close in the 2024 NCAA Division II South Regional 1 after a 3-2 loss to the host and number one seed #15 Auburn University at Montgomery. The Lions opened the day with a win to keep their season alive as they posted a much-needed 10-0 victory over the eight-seed Spring Hill College. Saint Leo ends the 2024 season with a 38-19 overall record. As a team the Lions hitters went the entire three games with out striking out at the plate.

The storyline of the day was the pitching by Kayla Betts as she went the distance in game one with a complete game shutout to end the Badgers season. Betts entered the game in the second inning of the second as she inherited a 2-1 deficit proceeded to shut down the Warhawks for four straight innings including loading the bases in the fourth with one out an putting a zero on the board.

On the day at the plate Briana Neal and Alyssa Perez led the offense with three hits each. Perez had three runs scored in the first game. The Lions tallied 18 total hits across the two games, 16 hits for singles as a pinch hit RBI double by Jayla Brooks and a leadoff triple by Sydney Cline were the only extra base hits for the Green & Gold.

(5) SAINT LEO 10, (8) SPRING HILL 0
  • Saint Leo took control of the game from the top of the first and never looked back. Alyssa Perez scored the first run of the game on a two out infield RBI single off the bat of Briana Neal.
  • The Lions added another run in the top of the second as Sydney Cline tagged up on a sacrifice fly from Shyanne Waller for a 2-0 Saint Leo lead.
  • After not scoring in the third and fourth innings, Neal sent another two RBI base hit to left that once again plated Perez as the Lions took a 3-0 lead.
  • Cline opened the top of the sixth with a rocket of a shot to left center for a leadoff triple. This prompted the Badgers to make a pitching change and the first pitch by the new pitcher sailed over the catchers head an allowed Cline to score the fourth Saint Leo run.
  • The top of the seventh saw the Lions plate six runs on just two hits while taking advantage of two errors by Spring Hill. Jayla Brooks came off the bench to pinch hit for Hope Epps and drove in Neal with a double to left field for a 6-0 lead. The Lions scored two more runs on a fielding error and a fielder's choice. On back-to-back plays Waller scored the ninth run on a wild pitch and then Hailey Beuerlein hit an RBI ground out that scored Perez for the tenth Lion run.
  • Kayla Betts was the highlight of the pitching for the Lions as she twirled a gem to improve to 8-3 on the season. She pitched a complete game shutout for her fifth complete game and fourth shutout on the season. Betts struck out two while walking none and hitting one.
(1) #15 AUM 3, (5) SAINT LEO 2
  • Morgan Shannon made the start in the circle for the Lions in the second game of the day. The Warhawks got the first two batters on via a leadoff infield hit and a hit by pitch. Following a groundout to short that put runners on second and third, a base hit two center allowed the first two runs of the game to score.
  • Just as she had in the previous two games, Alexis Barber was quick to swing the bat to get on as she led off the bottom of the first inning with a base hit through the left side of the infield. Saint Leo responded in the bottom of the first with a single run on an RBI one-out base hit up the middle by Perez to make it a 2-1 deficit.
  • Following a lead off double down the left field line that just got past Waller at third, the Lions make a pitching change. Kayla Betts made her way back into the circle and proceeded to get three straight outs on a pop up, fly out, and ground out to strand the runner at second.
  • Madyson Coe had a productive out in the bottom of the third as her ground out to second allowed Waller to score and tie the game at 2-2.
  • The top and the bottom of the fourth saw both teams load the bases with one out but both teams failed to push a run across the plate and the defense on both side came up big for their teams.
  • Betts got two quick outs in the top of the sixth and looked to be in good shape to put another zero on the board, but a bunt single changed the momentum as the a steal of second had the go-ahead run in scoring position for the host institution. A base hit to center with two outs scored the runner from second to give AUM the 3-2 advantage.
  • After AUM got two quick outs to open the bottom of the sixth, the Lions put together a little rally of their own. Epps walked; Thomas singled to third allowing Epps to reach third followed by a walk of Barber to load the bases with two outs. Shyanne Waller came to the plate and sent a rocket over to first base that AUM's first baseman made an incredible stop to step on first and end the threat.
  • Betts sent the Warhawks down in order in the top of the seventh.
  • Briana Neal drew a two out walk in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game going and stole second to put a runner in scoring position. However, a ground out to second ended the threat and the Lions season.
