SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team closed out the 2024 regular season with a doubleheader split against #7 Tampa on Saturday evening. GAME 1: #7 TAMPA 10, SAINT LEO 2
  • Tampa opened the game with a first inning run capitalizing on a pair of fielding errors in the outfield by the Lions.
  • Saint Leo was quick to respond in the bottom of the first inning as Alexis Barber opened the bottom of the first with a double to down the left field line and made her way to third on a fielding error by the left fielder. Shyanne Waller immediately brough in the run as she sent a sacrifice fly to left field and Barber tagged and scored the tying run.
  • Barber led off the bottom of the third with a base hit up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Waller. Hailey Beuerlein came to the plate with runners on first and second and sent an RBI base hit to left field and advanced to second as Tampa attempted to get the runner out trying for home.
  • Kayla Betts sent down eight straight Spartans before a lead off walk in the top of the fourth ended that streak.
  • The Spartans tied the game on the final play of the top of the fourth inning at 2-2. Tampa's DP sent an RBI base hit through the left side of the infield and made her way around second. As the throw came home, she tried making it to third and was thrown out to end the inning limiting the damage to just one run.
  • Tampa plated eight more runs over the final three frames of the game, taking its second lead of the game as two runs score on a fielding error by the Lions first baseman. Back-to-back two-out hits, a double to left and a base hit up the middle plated two more runs for the visitors, giving them a 6-2 advantage.
  • Down 10-2 entering the final frame, the Lions attempted to get back in the game with back-to-back one out base hits by Adriana Przespolewski and Barber gave the Lions a pair of base runners. The runners moved up 60 feet on a ground out giving the Lions two runners in scoring position but a ground out to third ended the game.
