SAINT LEO, Fla. – In a battle between two top-three teams, the third-ranked Saint Leo baseball team lost both games of its doubleheader against top-ranked Tampa on Saturday in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action. The Lions lost game one 9-3 followed by a 7-5 loss in game two.
Game One: #1 Tampa 9, #3 Saint Leo 3
The Spartans claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI-double down the right field line followed by a two-run homer in the fourth as Tampa led by a 3-0 margin. The Spartans added a run in the fifth on a groundout double play. 4-0. Senior Josh Davis blasted a solo home run in the sixth to give the Lions some momentum. Tampa answered with a trio of runs in the bottom half of the sixth 7-1.
During the top of the seventh, senior Caleb Adams launched a solo homer which was followed by another solo jack, this time from classmate Mikey Scott in the eighth as Saint Leo cut its deficit down to 7-3 while in the bottom of the eighth Tampa scored a pair of runs and led 9-3.
Junior Callen Moss went 2-for-3 at the dish with one walk while Davis finished the game with two hits and one RBI along with a run scored. Both sophomore Dylan Mass and graduate student Zach Benson recorded a knock. Scott and Adams each posted solo homers during the game in addition to both of them registering an RBI. On the mound, senior Evan Wolf started for the Lions and posted a pair of strikeouts while allowing seven runs on nine hits in 5.1 innings.
Game Two: #1 Tampa 7, #3 Saint Leo 5
A four-run sixth inning gave the Lions a 4-1 lead that was ignited by a solo home run down the right field line by Benson followed by a fielder's choice RBI by Moss before sophomore Ryan Crivello blasted a two-RBI single up the middle. Tampa answered in the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, 4-2. During the seventh, Scott reached first on an error as Benson crossed home plate, however, in the seventh and eighth, the Spartans amassed five runs and claimed a 7-5 lead.
Benson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored while Scott registered a pair of hits. Crivello recorded a pair of RBI with one hit and Moss batted in one run in a 1-for-2 performance at the plate. On the mound, senior Aedan Walter started and tallied a trio of strikeouts and allowed two runs on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Saint Leo returns to the field Thursday, May 9 as it hosts Rollins in SSC play, starting at 3 p.m.
