#18 Softball Drops Doubleheader to #20 Wilmington (Del.)

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 18th-ranked Saint Leo University softball team dropped its doubleheader to the 20th-ranked Wilmington (Del.) Wildcats at home on Friday evening. The Wildcats used a three run third inning to take the first game and erased a one run deficit in the second game to complete the doubleheader sweep of the Lions.

Saint Leo falls to 17-8 on the season while Wilmington improves to 7-8 overall.

Outside of a pair of innings across the two games, the Lions pitching was efficient in keeping both games close.

#20 Wilmington 3, #18 Saint Leo 1
  • The Lions ran into a tough Wildcats pitcher managing just a single run on three hits in first game.
  • Wilmington's Kylee Gunkel pitched a complete game striking out a pair of Lions while walking five.
  • The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Alexis Barber sent a two-out base hit to right field that scored Briana Neal.
  • Wilmington quickly responded in the top of the third inning plating three runs to a take a 3-1 lead.
  • Saint Leo threatened in the bottom of the sixth as a Hope Epps base hit up the middle put runners in scoring position with one out and Shyanne Waller walked to load the bases with two outs. Gunkel ended the threat as she got a fly out to center to end the inning.
  • Ainsley Perdicaris pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless ball as she allowed just a single hit while striking out one.

#20 Wilmington 3, #18 Saint Leo 2
  • Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI base hit to right center.
  • The Lions took advantage of a throwing error by the Wildcats in the bottom of the second inning as Neal reached and Jayla Brooks advanced to third.
  • Grace Dunsworth entered as a pinch runner and stole home as part of a double steal to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Lions took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Thomas scored on a bases loaded fielder's choice that saw the Wildcats get the runner out trying to advance to third.
  • Morgan Shannon got a groundout to third base to end the top of the second inning. This began a stretch of 10 straight Wildcats retired before a lead off infield single to open the top of the sixth.
  • The visiting team tied the game at 2-2 on a lead off solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning.
  • The Wildcats capitalized on a throwing error by the Lions as the second out was made. Wilmington's third baseman lined out to the pitcher and the Lions attempted to double off the runner but an errant throw went down the line and allowed the visitors to score the go-ahead run.
