Thomas Twirls First Career No-Hitter as Softball Sweeps Caldwell

SAINT LEO, Fla. – Sophomore pitcher/utility player Haleigh Thomas led the Saint Leo University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the Caldwell Cougars on Tuesday. Thomas pitched her first career no-hitter in game one and followed that with a 3-for-3 showing at the plate in game two.

Thomas' team-leading sixth win saw her became just the second pitcher on the Lions staff to not allow a hit in a game in 2024 as Kayla Betts held Converse hitless in February.

Thomas came up big for the Lions in the second game as she put the game-winning run on third base on a base hit up the middle in the eighth inning.

Madyson Coe went four-for-six on the day including a three-for-three showing in game two. Her final hit of the day ended the day as her base hit to left drove in Alexis Barber to win the game for the Lions and complete the doubleheader sweep.

GAME 1: SAINT LEO 3, CALDWELL 0
  • Thomas allowed just two base runners in seven innings and just one base runner after the lead off batter to pitch her first career no-hitter.
  • The defense came up big for the sophomore pitcher early as the Cougars ran themselves into a double play. Following a walk to start the game, the second Caldwell batter laid down a bunt that successfully moved the runner to second. Briana Neal touched first to get the batter out and immediately sent the ball down to second to get the base runner rounding second and Adrianna Przpolewski applied the tag for the second out.
  • Thomas followed that up by retiring the next six batters she faced before allowing a two-out walk in the top of the third inning. She closed out the final four innings sending down 12 straight batters.
  • On offense, the Lions took the lead in the second inning as pinch runner Grace Dunsworth came around to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Hope Epps.
  • Coe drove in what proved to be an insurance run for the Lions as she scored Sydney Cline on a base hit up the middle to make it a 2-0 Lions lead.
  • Barber opened the bottom of the fifth with a triple to centerfield that found its way to the wall and allowed Barber to run into third standing up. Cline put the home team up 3-0 as she sent an RBI-base hit to left that allowed Barber to easily race home.

GAME 2: SAINT LEO 2, CALDWELL 1 (8 inns.)
  • Morgan Shannon made the start in game two for the Lions and saw Caldwell take an early lead in the first inning on back-to-back one-out hits including an RBI triple to right.
  • Saint Leo struggled to get anything going as the Lions stranded runners at third in the second and third innings.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Lions got on the board on a Coe base hit to tie the game at 1-1.
  • Caldwell threatened in the top of the seventh but Shannon stranded the one-out base hit to put the bat in the hands of her teammates.
  • Tiereny Hocquard entered the circle in the top of the eighth and was quickly greated with a base hit up the middle. She settled in after that and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
  • Barber led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit through the right side and advanced to second on a Sydney Cline sacrifice bunt. After Haleigh Thomas singled up the middle to put runners on the corners, Coe looped a base hit to left that scored Barber for the winning run.
  • Hocquard picked up her fifth win of the season.
