#18 Softball Splits Doubleheader with Tiffin

SAINT LEO, Fla. – #18-Saint Leo University softball split its Tuesday evening doubleheader against Tiffin University. Game one was a high-scoring affair that saw both teams produce their own eight run innings as the visitors took game one 12-11 in eight innings. Game two was the exact opposite as the Lions scored the game's only run on a base hit in the third inning.

Saint Leo moves to 17-6 on the season and Tiffin is now 9-5.

GAME 1: Tiffin 12, #18 Saint Leo 11 (8 innings)
  • Tiffin jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the first inning as 13 batters came to plate and produced seven hits.
  • After two runs in the third put the Dragons up 10-0, Saint Leo put eight runs across the plate in the fourth inning as seven runs were scored before the first out was made. The Lions scored eight runs on eight hits to cut the Dragons lead from 10 runs to just two.
  • Saint Leo tied the game in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI base hits.
  • The Dragons took their final lead of the game, plating two runs in the top of the eighth inning.
  • The Lions cut the Dragons' lead to one as Haleigh Thomas scored on an error by Tiffin.

GAME 2: #18 Saint Leo 1, Tiffin 0
  • Alexis Barber scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third inning as Hailey Beuerlein sent an RBI base hit to center field.
  • Haleigh Thomas pitched a seven inning one-hitter while walking one and striking out 10 batters to earn her fifth win of the season.
  • After a two-out single in the top of the first, Thomas retired the next 10 batters faced. The sophomore pitcher allowed just two runners past first base, both on stolen bases.
 
UP NEXT
The Lions are back in action on Friday for a top-25 matchup as #20 Wilmington (Del.) comes to town for a doubleheader. First pitch on March 8 is set for 5 p.m. at University Softball Stadium.
