#20 Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep of Assumption

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The 20th-ranked Saint Leo University softball team opened its week with a doubleheader sweep of the Assumption Greyhounds on Monday evening. The Lions used a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-2 victory in game one. A three-run second inning in game two was all the Lions needed for a 3-1 win to complete the sweep.

The Lions improved to 16-5 overall and the Greyhounds drop to 2-2.

Sydney Cline led the Lions offense with three hits and five RBI.

#20 SAINT LEO 7, Assumption 2
  • The Lions pitched themselves into trouble early in the first inning as the Greyhounds put runners on first and second following a leadoff walk and a one out error. Morgan Shannon regrouped and got a fly out to left and a pop up to short to end the threat and put the bats in the Lions hands.
  • Saint Leo wasted no time getting runners on as a leadoff base hit from Alexis Barber followed by a successful bunt to third by Haleigh Thomas gave the home team its first runner in scoring position. Jayla Brooks fouled out to right field but an alert Barber on second tagged up and advanced to third.
  • With the bases loaded, Assumption got its second out as Alyssa Perez reached on a fielder's choice but Barber was cut down at home. Briana Neal put the Lions on the board with a base hit up the middle scoring Thomas.
  • Shannon worked around a few base runners in the second and third inning to keep the game 1-0 in favor of the home team.
  • Following a pitching change in the top of the fourth inning, the Greyhounds tied the game at 1-1 on a bases loaded passed ball.
  • The Lions bats broke open the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs on just one hit as 10 batters came to plate. Saint Leo regained the lead on back-to-back bases loaded walks following a pitching change by the visitors. After a bases loaded wild pitch allowed pinch runner Grace Dunsworth to put the Lions up 4-1, Madyson Coe sent a base hit up the middle to advance everyone up 60 feet and drive in the fifth Lions run.
  • The Greyhounds cut the Lions lead to three with a two out RBI base hit in the top of the fifth.
  • Saint Leo quickly responded in the bottom of the fifth as Hope Epps opened with a triple and Shyanne Waller followed with a walk. With two runners now in scoring position, Sydney Cline sent a base hit up the middle that hit second base and allowed both runners to score putting the Lions up 7-2.
  • Tierney Hocquard pitched 3.1 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out two as she picked up her fourth win of the season.

#20 Saint Leo 3, Assumption 1
  • Game two opened with a base hit up the middle. The Lions caught a little bit of a break as the next batter flew out to center to begin a double play as the Greyhounds were under the assumption that an illegal pitch would be called. An illegal pitch was not called and the runner at first was doubled off.
  • Sydney Cline delivered another big hit for the Lions as she laced a two out RBI double to right center put the home team up 2-0. Cline later came around to score on a fielding error by the centerfielder as the Lions scored all the runs they needed to take the second game and complete the sweep.
  • Assumption got its only run of the game as Corine Mahan sent a rocket down the third base line into the left field foul territory to score the runner from second.
  • Th Lions had two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning but were unable to plate any runs. From the fifth inning on Alyssa Perez reaching on a fielding error by the pitcher was the only base runner to close out the game.
