DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Saint Leo University softball team completed a three-game series sweep of the Embry-Riddle Eagles with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Haleigh Thomas and
Kayla Betts both picked up the wins for the Lions with Betts remaining a perfect 4-0 in the circle and Thomas winning her team-best ninth game of the season. The Lions improved to 25-10 overall and 12-3 in SSC play.
Briana Neal,
Madyson Coe, and
Alexis Barber all collected three hits on the day and combined to score five of the Lions 13 runs. Seven of Saint Leo's 18 hits were doubles.
Thomas surpassed the 100-strikeout mark with her first strike out in the second game.
GAME1: SAINT LEO 6, EMBRY-RIDDLE 1
- Saint Leo jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Alexis Barber scored on a Madyson Coe ground out.
- Kayla Betts was nearly lights out as she improved to 4-0 on the season allowing a single run on three while walking two and striking out three in 4.1 innings pitched.
- Back-to-back doubles by Shyanne Waller and Haleigh Thomas tacked on three runs for the Lions to extend their lead to 4-0.
- Embry-Riddle got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on one out sac fly as Morgan Shannon took over for Kayla Betts in the circle.
- Briana Neal opened the sixth inning with a lead off double and advanced to third on a sac bunt off the bat of Hope Epps. Barber sent an RBI base hit through the left side to score Neal for the fifth Lions run.
- Just like the sixth inning, the Lions opened the seventh inning with a lead off double as Coe collected the eighth Lions hit of the game. Waller reached on a fielding error by the second baseman putting runners on the corners with one out. Neal came to the plate with two outs and delivered an RBI base hit to left that scored Coe from third putting the Lions up 6-1.
- Shannon stranded a two-out double in the seventh inning to close out the game and secure the series win for the Green and Gold.
GAME 2: SAINT LEO 7, EMBRY-RIDDLE 3
- Just like the first game, Saint Leo jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. And just like the first game, Coe drove in Barber this time with an RBI base hit to center.
- The Eagles responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning as a fielding error allowed the home team to tie the game at 1-1. A batter later, the Eagles took a 3-1 lead on a two-RBI double to left center that forced Saint Leo to make a pitching change.
- Haleigh Thomas came on in relief and shut down the Eagles allowing no runs on three hits while walking three and striking out five to pick up her ninth win of the season.
- Neal scored her second run of the day pulling the Lions within one in the second inning. Alexis Barber had a productive out as she grounded out to the pitched as the runners advanced a base allowing Neal to score making it a 3-2 game.
- Hailey Beuerlein hit a sac fly to right that scored Grace Dunsworth to tie the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning. The Lions capitalized on the Eagles fielding error and took a lead as Waller crossed the plate.
- For the second straight inning, the Lions scored on an Eagles fielding error as Cline crossed the plate for the fifth Saint Leo run.
- Beuerlein sent a two-RBI double to left field that scored Nia DeBenedittis and Alyssa Perez for the final runs of the game.
- Thomas opened the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back strike outs but the second batter reached first on a dropped third strike. No damage was done as the Lions got back-to-back line outs to end the game and complete the three-game sweep.

Saint Leo returns to action next weekend as it hosts Florida Southern on Thursday and Friday. First pitch on Thursday is set for 6 p.m.
